Police Calls: Forgery Theft, Tussle with Thief at Goodwill, Man Asleep in Planter Box

The Albany police logs for Aug. 7-8 include a purported call from the IRS threatening arrest and deportation if $2,500 is not wired to pay back taxes, an arrest for bad checks at Target, auto burglary, and a man in a Spiderman mask sitting on a rock.

The following information was obtained from the daily incident log and arrest log of the Albany Police Department.

Wednesday, Aug. 7

DUI arrest – At 12:44 a.m., police arrested a 22-year-old Oakland woman at Buchanan and Interstate 80 on suspicion of driving under the influence and having a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or more. 

Money asked to free relative from Mexican jail – At 7:56 a.m., police received a report that subjects called a resident on Tevlin requesting money to free her grandson from jail in Mexico. The reporting party told the subjects that she has no son by that name, and they disconnected. The reporting party wanted only to have a record of the call at this time. Disposition: Log note only. (Editor's note: It may be that the reference to the "son" actually refers to the grandson, or vice versa.)

Male in Spiderman mask sitting on rock – At 7:58 a.m., police received a report of a male in a Spiderman mask sitting on a rock at Masonic and Solano. Disposition: Log note only.

Others' mail scattered in resident's yard – At 1:27 p.m., a resident on Brighton reported just arriving home and finding other people's mail and papers strewn about in his front yard. Disposition: Situation corrected by APD.

Man with cart warned – At 4:43 p.m., police received a report of a man in baseball cap pushing a cart with large bags in the hundred block of Madison. Disposition: Miscellaneous violation – warning given.

Theft and tussle at Goodwill – At 6:38 p.m., police received a report of man walking out with merchandise from the Goodwill on San Pablo. The reporting party grabbed the merchandise, but the subject snatched the merchandise back and fled on a bike. The suspect was described as black in his 40s, carrying a black backpack and wearing gray or black pants and a goldish-colored shirt with stripes and a gold logo on the back. The bike was an older model with red rims. Disposition: Case report taken. 

Transient warned after urinating on tree at Memorial Park – At 7:03 p.m., police logged a report that one of two transient males was urinating on a tree near the Veterans Memorial Building. Disposition: Miscellaneous violation – warning given.

Intruder at daughter's door – At 11:44 p.m., police received a call from a man saying he received a call from his daughter that someone was trying to open her front door. Disposition: Unable to locate source of complaint. (Editor's note: The log entry says "occurred on Kains," leaving some question about whether the father who called was on Kains or whether daughter lives on Kains.)

Thursday, Aug. 8

Auto burglary – At 8:06 a.m., police received a report of a cold burglary of a vehicle parked on Curtis. Disposition: Case report taken. 

Car window smashed – At 9:26 a.m., police received a report that the front passenger window was smashed on a vehicle on Curtis. Disposition: Log note only.

Two men apparently smoking pot – At 10:23 a.m., police received a report of two men, one wearing a USC shirt, who appeared to be smoking marijuana at Curtis and Thousand Oaks. Disposition: Unable to locate source of complaint.

Man sleeping in planter box – At 11:52 a.m., police received a report of a man sleeping in a planter box on San Pablo. Disposition: Responsible/s advised of complaint, will correct situation.

Person on phone falls, disconnects – At 12:06 p.m., a citizen reported being on the phone with someone who stated she fell, and then the phone disconnected. Disposition: Subject/s transported to hospital. (Editor's note: The log entry says "occurred on Pierce," leaving some question about whether it was the person who contacted police or the person who fell who was on Pierce.)

Auto burglary – At 1:29 p.m., police received a report of a vehicle burglary after 9 a.m. this morning on Solano. A window was smashed and sunglasses and a pillow were stolen. Disposition: Case report taken.

Hit and run – At 2:42 p.m., police received a report of white Toyota Land Cruiser being sideswiped at 4:50 p.m. the previous day with side-view mirror of a silver American sedan driven by an older man in glasses. The reporting party is a witness who doesn't know if the sedan driver left info. Disposition: Case report taken.

Hit and run – At 4:39 p.m., police received a report of a hit and run on Washington that may have occurred the previous evening. A vehicle was damaged on the passenger side. Disposition: Case report taken.

Extortion threat to deport for not paying taxes – At 4:40 p.m., a person told police that the person's mother received a call from a subject claiming to be with the legal department of the IRS saying the reporting party had not paid 2011-12 taxes and that a warrant would be issued for her arrest and that she would be deported if she didn't wire $2,500. Disposition: Log note only.

Fake checks arrest at Target – At 6:49 p.m., police logged a report of a woman in her 20s using fake checks at Target. Disposition: Arrest made.

$600 stolen by forgery – At 8:36 p.m., police logged a report of a signature forged on a balance transfer check with a loss of $600. Disposition: Case report taken.
