Police Calls: Man Shoplifts $400 in Produce, Other Items at Safeway

The Albany police logs for Sept. 23-24 include a $400 shoplifting loss at Safeway, two screaming men, a stolen vehicle, fraudulent use of Royal Cafe's checking account, a stolen cell phone and a backpack found with pot inside.

The following information was obtained from the daily incident log and arrest log of the Albany Police Department.

Monday, Sept. 23

Royal Cafe identity theft – At 11:57 a.m., police received a report that unknown persons used the Royal Cafe business checking account between February and October of last year to pay Chase and Discover Card bills. Disposition: Case report taken.

Non-injury accident – At 3:33 p.m., police received a report of a non-injury minor collision on Madison. Caller was disconnected after being placed on hold – possibly may have exchanged information with the other driver. Disposition: Unable to locate source of complaint.

Cell phone theft – At 6:03 p.m., police received a report of a HTC One cell phone taken around 10 a.m. from Allied Building Products on Eastshore. The locator on the phone is not working. The reporting party will contact police if and when it comes back on. Disposition: Log note only.

Pacing male shouting to himself – At 6:17 p.m., police received a report of male with a beard walking back and forth in front of the reporting party's residence on Marin shouting to himself. Disposition: Responsible/s advised of complaint, will correct situation.

Construction after 6 p.m. on Kains – At 7:13 p.m., police received a complaint of street construction noise on Kains after 6 p.m. in violation of Albany Municipal Code section 8-1.7g. The reporting party wants the responsibles to be informed and to stop working. Disposition: Responsible/s advised of complaint, will correct situation.

$400 in produce, other items shoplifted at Safeway – At 8:20 p.m., police received a report of a man taking $400 in produce and other items from Safeway. The man was described as black, light-skinned, bald, 5-feet 7-inches tall, 160 pounds and wearing a black shirt and jeans, last seen headed east on foot toward Berkeley. Disposition: Unable to locate source of complaint.

Tuesday, Sept. 24

Man taking recycling – At 5:42 a.m., police logged a report of a man dressed all in black taking recycling on San Carlos. 

Man taking recycling – At 7:11 a.m., police received a report of a man on a bike on Solano taking recycling. Disposition: Miscellaneous violation – warning given.

Homeless man sleeping on church steps – At 9:31 a.m., police received a report of a homeless man sleeping on the steps of a church at Marin and Stannage. Disposition: Matter or reported situation checks out O.K.

Stolen vehicle – At 10:12 a.m., police received a report of a vehicle stolen on Sante Fe this morning. Disposition: Case report taken.

Backpack with pot found – At 1:03 p.m., police received a report of backpack containing marijuana found at the Center for the Blind in Berkeley. Disposition: Matter/persons referred to outside agency.

Man creating disturbance at Target – At 1:30 p.m., police received a call of man in an army-type suit causing a disturbance at Target. Multiple calls came in. Disposition: Case report taken.

Screaming man at Mechanics Bank – At 2:30 p.m., police received a report of an agitated many in his 30s in a gray sweatsuit screaming near the drive-up window at Mechanics Bank. He has been asked to leave. Disposition: Unable to locate source of complaint.

Auto burglary – At 7:11 p.m., police received a report of items taken from an unlocked vehicle overnight at Visalia and Curtis. The reporting party wanted only to have a record of the incident. Disposition: Log note only.

Gunshot heard – At 7:19 p.m., police received a report of a single gunshot heard in the area just west of Ventura. Disposition: Unable to locate source of complaint.

DUI arrest – At 10:34 p.m., police arrested a 53-year-old Vallejo man at Fairmont and San Pablo avenues on suspicion of driving under the influence and having a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or more.

Set of keys found – At 11:35 p.m., police logged a report of a set of keys found at Neilson and Frances. Disposition: Miscellaneous public service provided.
