Police Calls: PG&E Phone Scam, Suspicious Man with Clipboard

The Albany police logs for Oct. 21-22 include a stolen vehicle, two drug paraphernalia arrests, a suspicious man with a clipboard at a resident's door, man claiming to represent PG&E and demanding that money be wired via CVS.

The following information was obtained from the daily incident log and arrest log of the Albany Police Department.

Monday, Oct. 21

Drug paraphernalia arrest – At 12:02 a.m., police arrested a 31-year-old male transient, who previously resided in El Sobrante, at 1100 Eastshore on suspicion of illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. The arrest followed an 11:50 p.m. report of officer-initiated activity at Golden Gate Fields leading to a possession-of-drug-paraphernalia arrest.

Vehicle theft – At 7:42 a.m., police received a report of vehicle stolen on Solano. Disposition: Case report taken.

Possessions blocking pedestrians – At 11:14 a.m., police received a complaint of possessions spread out and blocking pedestrians at Evelyn and Brighton. Disposition: Miscellaneous violation – warning given.

Wallet found – At 1:04 p.m., a report in the lobby reporting finding a wallet an hour earlier on Masonic. Disposition: Case report taken.

Non-injury accident – At 3:26 p.m., police received a report of a non-injury accident involving a neighbor's vehicle at Brighton and Evelyn. Disposition: Case report taken.

Abandoned vehicle – At 5:38 p.m., police received a report of vehicle parked in front on Gateview for about a month. Disposition: Log note only.

Albany Bulb-related request – At 5:46 p.m., police logged a report of a person in the police lobby requesting to speak to an officer about protesting and finding a place to live after leaving the Albany Bulb. The reporting party was reluctant to provide more information. Disposition: Log note only.

Suspicious man with clipboard at door – At 8:39 p.m., police received a report of a man in his early 20s in a black sweatshirt carrying a clipboard who knocked on the reporting party's door on Peralta. When the reporting party told the man he doesn't do business with anyone carrying a clipboard, the man started talking unprofessionally. The reporting party would like him to be checked out in case he isn't legitimate. Disposition: Miscellaneous violation – warning given.

Outstanding warrant arrest – At 11:38 p.m., police logged an arrest on an outstanding warrant at the Buchanan Interchange. (Editor's note: the arrest doesn't appear on the arrest log, and the incident log doesn't provide information about the person arrested.)

Tuesday, Oct. 22

911 call about annoying cement truck – At 12:04 a.m., police logged an exchange with a caller who was told that she didn't have an emergency and was advised to call back on the business line. She complained that a cement truck, not for the first time, was blocking her driveway and spraying her plants as the chute was being cleaned. Disposition: No police action warranted at this time.

2 bikes found
– At 2:34 p.m., police received a report of two bikes found behind a building on Brighton. Disposition: Case report taken.

PG&E scam call
– At 3:22 p.m., police received a report that a male caller stating he is with PG&E requested money be wired through CVS or else he will cut off their power. The reporting party's Piedmont location was scammed previously by the same subject. The caller stated he will call back in about an hour, approximately at 4:10 p.m. Disposition: Matter/persons referred to outside agency. (Editor's note: The log entry says, "Occurred at Barney's on Solano."

Questions on Buchanan/Pierce stoplight – At 3:31 p.m., a person was in the lobby with questions regarding the new stoplight at Pierce and Buchanan. Disposition: Miscellaneous public service provided. (Editor's note: Three days earlier, on Oct. 19, the log recorded three calls complaining the red for eastbound traffic on Buchanan at Pierce was not working properly.)

Non-injury accident – At 4:58 p.m., police received a report of a non-injury accident involving two vehicles blocking the roadway at Washington and Kains. Disposition: Case report taken.

911 call on van possibly pulling child in
– At 6:50 p.m., police received a report from a person just leaving work who saw a parked van into which a child was possibly being pulled on San Pablo. The reporting party told RPD that the van occupant(s) knew she was sitting there close by waiting in her vehicle. Disposition: Matter/persons referred to outside agency.

Drug paraphernalia arrest 
– At 10:08 p.m., police arrested a 27-year-old male Berkeley man at Buchanan and Pierce on suspicion of illegal possession of drug paraphernalia. The arrest followed an 8 p.m. report of an officer-initiated check of a pedestrian at Buchanan and Pierce.
