Police Calls: Tire Vandals, Car Thieves, Mysterious Whistler, Kids with Drugs, Racetrack Fight and More

APRIL 1, SUNDAY

5:20 p.m. Police responded to a hit-and-run at Golden Gate Fields in which one man was reportedly dragged behind a car after trying to stop a fight. .

5:45 p.m. A woman reported "numerous household items taken by her international student's friends" in the 1000 block of Kains Avenue. Police took a case report.

5:56 p.m. Police responded to an injury-accident, at Cleveland Avenue and Interstate 80, involving a Toyota Camry and a GMC Safari. A vehicle coming off the freeway struck a vehicle on Cleveland that failed to stop at a stop sign, causing damage to both vehicles. A passenger in one vehicle sustained minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital. Alcohol was not a factor, and neither driver was cited. 

5:59 p.m. Police arrested Janae Dasun Walker of Oakland on suspicion of driving under the influence at Gilman Street and Eastshore Highway. He was taken to the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in downtown Oakland. 

APRIL 2, MONDAY

2:15 a.m. Someone turned in a pair of Volkswagen keys that were found at . 

6:52 a.m. A property owner on San Pablo Avenue reported a man sleeping behind his building. Police gave the camper a warning.

1:11 p.m. Police recovered a stolen vehicle at and arrested Jose and Rita Ramirez of San Lorenzo on suspicion of auto theft. Jose Ramirez also was arrested in connection with a misdemeanor warrant from another law enforcement agency. They were taken to the Glenn Dyer jail. 

2:21 p.m. A resident on Talbot Avenue reported a suspicious man who knocked on the front door, then "ducked down near the front stairs." Police arrested Scott Michael Wilson, a transient with Berkeley connections, and took him to Glenn Dyer jail. 

5:49 p.m. Police were called to the scene of an in-progress auto burglary at Neilson and Frances streets. They took a case report. 

7:29 p.m. An ambulance was requested for a dog bite victim at . 

APRIL 3, TUESDAY

2:12 a.m. Three men took a couple bottles of alcohol from , and left on foot toward Curtis Street. 

8:04 a.m. Overnight a thief unlocked a car on Neilson and took some coins.

9:09 a.m. Authorities were called to the Brittany Arms on Kains for several smoke detectors going off. The Albany Fire Department said the cause turned out to be burnt food, and the natural ventilation cleared the area of smoke within seconds. 

9:40 a.m. Police arrested Ruth Hennigan of Richmond on suspicion of shoplifting from Target. She was released with a notice to appear in court. 

4:37 p.m. A caller on Carmel Avenue reported that the "postman just urinated" on his or her lawn, then left eastbound in a U.S. Postal Service truck. The caller was referred to another agency for help.

4:44 p.m. A man went into the Police Department to report that his license plate had been stolen in January from Gateview.

7:55 p.m. Police received another report about a transient camping out behind . 

APRIL 4, WEDNESDAY

1:05 p.m. Police were called to take a case report in the attendance office and speak with students found with marijuana.

1:52 p.m. A caller at Washington Avenue and Curtis reported a "well dressed man knocking on doors ... and whistling" who seemed suspicious. Police were unable to locate him.

4:03 p.m. A resident on Pomona reported that his or her two driver's side tires had been vandalized overnight.
