Police Calls: Two Large Chests, Stolen Vehicles Recovered, Lost Kitty Makes it Home (and more)

FEB. 21

7:11 a.m. Someone reported a person sleeping in the doorway of I Touch U in the 1000 block of San Pablo Avenue.

10:55 a.m. Police arrested Eduardo Espinoza of Fremont for a parole violation after speaking with him near the on San Pablo. He was taken to the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in downtown Oakland.

12:04 p.m. A man in the 500 block of Madison Street told police he was awakened at 6 a.m by a thief using a power tool to try to steal a family member's catalytic converter. 

12:17 p.m. Someone called police to report a campsite being set up behind the basketball courts. 

5:14 p.m. Someone called police to report a vehicle on Washington Avenue "." Police gave the owner a warning.

FEB. 22

12:32 a.m. A man in a blue t-shirt broke through the front door of on Solano Avenue. He left eastbound on foot. 

5:40 a.m. Someone broke into a vehicle in the 1000 block of Talbot Avenue.

9:31 a.m. Police were called about a man hiding behind the dumpsters. Police spoke to the man and he said he would leave.

11:42 a.m. An elderly woman drove into a fence on Masonic Avenue in what was reported as an injury-accident. [Update, via the Police Department: The driver was a 79-year-old Albany woman who was found to have minor or no injuries; she was not taken to a hospital.]

2:54 p.m. Police were called to speak with a man in a Solano Avenue parking lot who was asking for money; property managers had asked him to leave but he refused. Police spoke to him and he said he'd move along.

4:13 p.m. Someone stole a vehicle from the 600 block of Adams Street earlier in the day.

10:57 p.m. Police arrested Robin Brooks of Berkeley in connection with two misdemeanor warrants from another law enforcement agency. She was taken to the Albany Police Department, then cited and released.

FEB. 23

12:17 a.m. Police arrested Arthur Hawkins III of Hayward on suspicion of driving under the influence at San Pablo and Carlson Boulevard. He was taken to the Glenn Dyer jail.

3:13 p.m. Police arrested James Alfred Croft of Albany in connection with a misdemeanor warrant from another agency. He was cited and released on a promise to appear in court. 

5:58 p.m. A woman called police after she said a solicitor was upset when she didn't have time to talk with him, then "returned later to apologize." 

8:17 p.m. Police arrested Maynard Rose of San Leandro at the Albany waterfront on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession. He was taken to the Glenn Dyer jail.

9:17 p.m. Police arrested Luis Rabanal of Kensington on suspicion of driving under the influence on a suspended or revoked license. He was taken to the Albany Police Department and released with a signed promise to appear in court.

FEB. 24

12:22 a.m. Police arrested Lena Deannia Hughes of Berkeley on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia. She was released on a promise to appear in court. 

11:22 a.m. Police received a report that a young male who appeared transient had set his shirt on fire at the station. Police gave him a warning.

1:24 p.m. Someone called 911 about dark smoke coming from a home on Evelyn Avenue. [Update, via the Fire Department: "This was the result of someone using a commercial fire pit in their back yard. The dark smoke was from the paper used to start the fire. The smoke dissipated after they started the fire."]

3:16 p.m. Someone reported smoke coming from a garage on Cerrito Street. responded. [Update, via the Fire Department: "This was the result of roofing contractors using their torches in the process of laying down tar paper."]

5:45 p.m. Someone broke into a vehicle in the 1000 block of Stannage Avenue the prior night.

8:01 p.m. Someone called the police to report "two large chests full of personal photos and possessions" had been left in front of his or her door on Kains Avenue. 

FEB. 25

12:14 a.m. Police arrested Janay Martin of Oakland on suspicion of driving under the influence near Gilman and Ninth streets. She was taken to the Glenn Dyer jail.

1:32 a.m. Police arrested Victor Oyola of Vallejo on suspicion of driving under the influence near San Pablo Avenue. He was cited and released.

8:30 a.m. Someone ransacked a vehicle on Ordway, and took aspirin, $5 in change and food, but left a purse. 

9:19 a.m. A caller on Cerrito expressed concern about workers on a nearby roof using a torch, saying "they started a fire on the roof yesterday and didn't have proper permits." No police action warranted at this time.

2:27 p.m. Someone on Key Route Boulevard told police he or she was "concerned about the transients and drug addicts."

5:10 p.m. A customer at reported that his or her wallet had been stolen within the past 20 minutes.

5:18 p.m. Someone broke into a vehicle on Ordway the prior night.

6:46 p.m. Police received another call about a purse that had been stolen from Albany Bowl.

8:01 p.m. A man broke into a car in a parking lot in the 1100 block of San Pablo and stole a purse and shopping bags.

FEB. 26

1:46 a.m. Police arrested Gabriel Moreno Jr. of Richmond at San Pablo and Francisco Street on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession. He was taken to the Glenn Dyer jail.

6:15 a.m. Police arrested Karla Mariela Melgar of Richmond on suspicion of driving under the influence near Buchanan Street and the Eastshore Highway. She was taken to the Glenn Dyer jail.

11:42 a.m. Callers from the 1400 block of Posen Avenue told police they'd found pry marks on their rear fence from while they were away on vacation; a lock to their rear shed had also been broken.

5:30 p.m. Police took a case report about a truck stolen from the parking lot. 

FEB. 27

11:07 a.m. Someone broke a window near the entrance of the over the weekend. 

12:45 p.m. A vehicle was stolen from the 500 block of Pierce Street within the prior three days. 

9:14 p.m. A hit-and-run victim on Nielson Street called police to report that the responsible driver had "left a note without very much info on it." 

9:36 p.m. A woman on Stannage Avenue called police to say she had lost her cat two weeks earlier, then spotted it in the window of an apartment on Kains. Police helped her reach the apartment's resident, and the woman was reunited with her cat.

FEB. 28

7:42 a.m. Someone shattered a rear window in the 1300 block of Solano.

11:22 a.m. The coroner's office was called for a woman on Curtis Street who was found deceased by a caregiver. She was identified as Alice June Hardie.

3:35 p.m. Police responded to a report in the 1000 block of Kains about a neighborhood dispute. One resident said there was a "sign in (his) neighbors yard that states 'I'm going to get him any way I can,'" and points back at his yard. 

9:31 p.m. Police arrested Jose Calvo of Albany on suspicion of driving under the influence in the 900 block of Curtis Street. He was taken to Glenn Dyer jail. 

FEB. 29

10:33 a.m. Police recovered a stolen vehicle in the 1200 block of Solano after someone called to report a truck blocking garages for an Evelyn Avenue apartment building. The vehicle was towed.

12:54 p.m. Police recovered a vehicle stolen from San Francisco in the 700 block of Solano.

2:05 p.m. Police arrested Harvey Walker, transient, after someone reported him possibly sleeping in an entrance of a driveway on Solano. He was found with an outside-agency felony warrant, and taken to Glenn Dyer jail.

2:40 p.m. Someone tried to buy $700 worth of champagne and scotch from with a gift card said to have been bought through an online order; the transaction didn't go through and the customer left by car.

MARCH 1

2:23 a.m. Police arrested Freddie Louis Lane of San Pablo on suspicion of vehicle theft, and possessing stolen property and burglary tools, at Solano and Fillmore Street. He was taken to Glenn Dyer jail.

7:35 a.m. Police responded to a vehicle accident in which two children were on San Pablo. One received minor injuries and the other was not reported to have been harmed.

1:36 p.m. Someone tried to break into in the 1000 block of San Pablo the prior night. 

1:37 p.m. Someone at reported seeing a tent pitched 75 yards south of the complex. Log note only.

3:50 p.m. A woman on Fillmore received an email "impersonating one of her friends for her to cater their event." Police took a case report to investigate what may have been identity theft.

MARCH 2

2:07 a.m. Police recovered a vehicle stolen out of Richmond in the 700 block of Pierce.
