Police Calls: Two Robberies, Gun Reports, Wallet and Purse Thefts and More

MAY 24, THURSDAY

2:22 p.m. Police were called about a woman going through recyclables on Talbot Avenue near Portland Avenue. They were unable to find her.

9:25 p.m. Police responded to a robbery at Stannage and Brighton avenues involving three young men, two of whom had handguns. .

10:21 p.m. A man in a black hoodie reportedly stole alcohol from Safeway on Solano Avenue.

MAY 25, FRIDAY

12:32 a.m. Police arrested Orren Clinton Smith of Berkeley on suspicion of public intoxication on San Pablo Avenue. Smith was taken to the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in downtown Oakland. 

6:27 a.m. Police gave a warning to a homeless person sleeping inside a blue sleeping bag at Christopher's Nothing Fancy Cafe.

10:52 a.m. A burglar stole a catalytic converter from a vehicle on Neilson Street.

11:20 a.m. A burglar tried to break into a home on Peralta Avenue the prior day. 

7:32 p.m. Someone went into the Albany Police Department to pick up a stolen vehicle that had been recovered.

11:18 p.m. A resident near Jackson Street reported a loud party, and asked police to see if they could quiet the partygoers down. 

MAY 26, SATURDAY

9:28 a.m. Police were called about a man selling apples at the northeast corner of Jackson Street and Solano Avenue. Authorities gave him a warning. 

12:40 p.m. Someone called police about a woman in her 40s, at San Pablo and Solano avenues, wearing purple capri pants "yelling and screaming for no reason." Police were unable to find her.

3:40 p.m. A caller at Memorial Park reported two pit bulls "that are acting aggressive to other dogs and ... preventing other park users access" to the park. Police investigated, but did not find a problem.

8:33 p.m. A caller on Pierce Street reported three teenage boys carrying a rifle or BB gun walking on an infrequently-used trail toward 545 Pierce.

10:41 p.m. Someone reported a robber who acted as if he had a gun, such as a sawed-off shotgun, in his pocket in the course of a robbery in the 900 block of Solano Avenue. One robber was described as black, in his mid-20s in a black peacoat with a gray scarf, beanie and mask. The second was described as a white or Hispanic man in a white hoodie and gray jeans. They left in a small silver newer-model hatchback, possibly a Mazda, driven by a third suspect. Police took a case report. (Albany Patch has requested additional information.)

11:31 p.m. Police arrested Ryan Louis Laplant of Oakland on suspicion of public intoxication at Clay Street and San Pablo Avenue after a report of a man and woman fighting with security outside the Albany Bowl. Police took Laplant to the Glenn Dyer jail.  

11:31 p.m. Someone reported shots from a BB gun or airsoft gun at Albany High School near the basketball courts. Police arrested Juan Carlos Linares and Daniel Edgardo Gonzalez, both of Richmond, on suspicion of burglary, possession of burglary tools and conspiracy. 

11:56 p.m. A resident reported three men cutting locks off a bike on Brighton Avenue with a bolt cutter, then leaving southbound on San Gabriel Avenue. Police indicated these three were connected to the 11:31 p.m. call at Albany High School. 

MAY 27, SUNDAY

3:21 p.m. A caller reported that a woman's wallet had been stolen from the Community Center 15 or 20 minutes earlier. The woman had been sitting at a table when she was approached by "a very chatty" black woman who was 5 feet 11 inches tall and wearing a blue sweatshirt. Police took a case report. 

3:52 p.m. A "regular transient" reportedly stole liquor from the Albany Arco on San Pablo. The caller said he had been "unable to stop" the thief. 

5:05 p.m. A thief stole a wallet from inside a home on Solano. 

5:11 p.m. Someone near Cornell and Marin avenues reported a bald black man wearing a black windbreaker and jeans, who might have been drinking, who "pulled out his penis (and) urinated on (a) tree." Police gave the man a ticket. 

7:50 p.m. Someone on Ventura Avenue reported a man in a brown shirt and blue jeans going through recycling. 

7:55 p.m. Police responded to a family fight in the 600 block of San Gabriel. They took a case report. 

8:40 p.m. A caller reported seeing a man wearing a mask at Washington and Santa Fe avenues. Police gave the man a warning. 

MAY 28, MONDAY

10:15 a.m. Police found a "white powder substance" in a container at the door to the west booking room at the Police Department.

10:23 a.m. Someone whose purse was stolen in Berkeley went into the Albany Police Department to ask for advice. 

11:44 a.m. A resident of Carmel Avenue went into the Police Department to report that a friend had borrowed his or her vehicle two weeks prior and refused to return it. 

7:46 p.m. A woman on Solano said that, 30 minutes earlier, a man followed her home and went inside her garage area. 

8:06 p.m. Someone burglarized a home in the 500 block of Evelyn Avenue. 

8:40 p.m. A caller on Curtis reported a man going through recycling before leaving southbound on foot. Police were unable to find him. 

MAY 29, TUESDAY

7:36 a.m. Someone reported a found wallet on top of a call box near an apartment complex entryway at Ramona and Solano avenues. Police were unable to locate it. 

9:21 a.m. A man who left his ATM card in the ATM at California Bank & Trust on Solano Avenue said he went back to the bank to retrieve it and was told the bank was going to destroy the card. He asked to speak with an officer about it. 

11:06 a.m. Someone on Madison Street reported an Asian man in his 70s wearing a straw hat, gray pants and a brown jacket, and pushing a baby stroller, taking recyclables out of a neighbor's yard. Police were unable to find him. 

11:39 a.m. Someone at Albany Aquarium reported a burglary sometime prior; the burglar got inside through a window. Police took a case report. 

12:29 p.m. Police were called to MacGregor High School for a report of a male transient trying to use the student restroom; "staff chased him away." The man was also said to have been at Albany Middle School trying to do the same thing. He was described as white, in his 50s, with long hair, a beard, blue jeans and a red shirt. He left heading south. Police were unable to find him. 

2:30 p.m. Police recovered a stolen vehicle on Portland Avenue. 

4:11 p.m. Someone stole a ladies purse from a restroom stall at the Albany Library. 

5:26 p.m. Someone from Berkeley called to report a pedestrian at Rose Street near San Pablo with a "big bag of marijuana" walking down the street. The caller was referred to the Berkeley Police Department. 

6:28 p.m. Someone reported four teenage girls opening up the gate to the tennis court at Ocean View Elementary, "yelling and throwing wet toilet paper" onto the court. Police gave the girls a warning. 

9:10 p.m. A caller on Hillside Avenue said electricity had gone off in the bedroom, and this was followed by the smell of smoke. Miscellaneous public service provided. 

11:17 p.m. The Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles Police Department called Albany Police for help with a death notification to a resident on Santa Fe Avenue. 

OTHER AREA ARRESTS

  • On May 16, the Oakland Police Department reported the arrest of Frederick Watts of Albany on suspicion of a hit-and-run resulting in injuries, and driving under the influence of alcohol, according to localcrimenews.com.
  • On May 20, the Monterey County sheriff's department reported the arrest of Daniel Jewitt of Albany on suspicion of resisting, obstructing or delaying a peace officer, public intoxication and probation violation, according to localcrimenews.com. 
  • On May 24, the Alameda County sheriff's department reported the arrest of Darien Foermer of Albany on suspicion of domestic battery, according to localcrimenews.com.
