Update: Police Investigate Apparent Suicide of Elderly Man Beneath BART Tracks

Albany police are investigating what appears to have been a suicide Wednesday morning near the BART tracks and , officials said.
At about 11:20 a.m., police received a telephone report of an elderly man with a head wound on the BART path across from 948 Masonic Ave., said Lt. Dan Adams of the .
Police found a 74-year-old El Cerrito man deceased at that location.

A handgun was found at the scene, and police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide.
Authorities had taped off about 100 feet of the near the library, and, at about 12:30 p.m., the Alameda County coroner's office was in the area to collect the remains.

Earlier this afternoon, police collected physical evidence and canvassed area homes for witnesses.
Due to the ongoing investigation, and the need to notify next of kin, the identity of the deceased man is not being released at this time, Adams said.
