Report of Gunshots in El Cerrito – Police Cite 'Suicide Incident'

El Cerrito police swarmed to Richmond and Manila streets this afternoon following a report of gunshots that was classified as a "suicide incident." The two streets were temporarily blocked.

El Cerrito police swarmed to the 1300 block of busy Richmond Street this afternoon, Friday, after a 911 call reported gunshots in the vicinity, police said.

A police advisory called the case a "suicide incident" without providing details.

The 911 call came in shortly before 3:30 p.m., said Lt. Paul Keith. Richmond and Manila streets were closed to traffic, and police issued an alert urging residents in the area to remain indoors and asking others to avoid the area.

A follow-up police advisory at 4:12 p.m. said the police action was concluded and the street opened. 

The incident drew at least seven police cars and media helicopters.

The El Cerrito Police responded to a suicide incident in the 1300 block of Richmond St. today. The police response closed off two streets temporarily and generated a response by a police helicopter and media helicopters. The incident is being investigated by the Investigations unit. There is no danger to the public.
