East Bay Regional Park District police officers detained 30-year-old Julio Rodriguez on Monday after spotting him in the park and noting that he matched the description of the suspect in the attack, according to police. The victim also positively identified Rodriguez as the man who assaulted her, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment, attempted kidnapping and assault and taken to county jail in Martinez, where he is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Police said a woman was hiking on a trail near the northeast edge of the park around 6 p.m. Friday when the suspect approached her from behind and tried to pull her into a wooded area.

The woman screamed, fought back and was able to escape the man, who fled on foot.

She then called park police who searched the park and surrounding areas for the suspect but were unable to immediately locate him.
