For Albany Man Accused of Running Down Cyclists, Trial Dates May Come This Month

David Mark Clark appeared in court earlier this month and was ordered to stand trial on attempted murder charges.

The 40-year-old Albany man accused of running down four bicyclists in June 2010 was ordered to stand trial on Aug. 2 on attempted murder charges, a spokesman for the district attorney's office said.

David Mark Clark has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery causing serious bodily injury.

Clark's next court date has been set for Aug. 31, said San Francisco district attorney's office Seth Steward on Thursday. The formal arraignment could result in the dates being set for Clark's trial.

There's a chance the date could change depending on whether Clark's case is a "time waiver" or "no-time waiver" case, said Steward. Deep budget cuts announced earlier this month will close a number of courtrooms and slow down proceedings, and it's not clear how that may affect this case.

Police said Clark appeared to target four bicyclists with his blue Nissan Rogue SUV, striking them all within a six-minute period at separate locations in the San Francisco's Mission and Potrero Hill neighborhoods.

He then crashed his car and ran away, police said. He was arrested two days later at the after reporting that his SUV had been carjacked, police said.

Of the four bicyclists who were struck, all of whom were male, three required hospitalization.

Following a two-day preliminary hearing in San Francisco Superior Court earlier this month, Judge Suzanne Bolanos ordered Clark to stand trial on the felony charges, Steward said.

According to the Bay Citizen, citing the district attorney's office, Clark faces 11 felonies: four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of battery causing serious bodily injury.
