Video: Police Report on May Traffic Incidents, Cyclist Accident

Sgt. Chris Willis of the Albany Police Department gave a report to the Traffic & Safety Commission on June 30.

Albany police officers wrote 87 tickets for moving violations in May, according to a report given Thursday night to the city . 

Sgt. Chris Willis gave commissioners a short presentation about Albany's traffic incidents that month, which included 15 DUI arrests and eight collisions.  

Three of the collisions were hit-and-run incidents that resulted in property damage only.

One collision resulted in a minor injury. 

Willis said a 12-year-old girl was riding her bike on the sidewalk of Kains Avenue, heading north, when a driver backing out struck her.

She received only minor injuries. 

Willis said he did not know if the girl was wearing a helmet.  

The sergeant also mentioned a in late June that resulted in several citations, along with a screening of 468 vehicles.

There were no DUI arrests, Willis said, adding that "checkpoints are primarily for public information."

Police had earlier reported to Albany Patch two injuries to cyclists in June. 

On June 1, at 7 p.m., a cyclist's arm was broken at Solano Avenue and Cerrito Street. 

On June 13 at 8:23 p.m., a cyclist was treated for a bruise to the arm after being struck by a car at Portland and Masonic avenues. Police said the cyclist was riding south on the bicycle path and saw two vehicles stopped on Portland. He went through the intersection without stopping and was hit by the second vehicle, which damaged his bike's front pedal and resulted in the minor arm injury.
