Activists Hold Weekend Harvest at Gill Tract; No Arrests

About 25 Occupy the Farm activists turned out Sunday to harvest the crops planted last spring at the Gill Tract. Click the "Keep me posted" button for updates.

Occupy the Farm activists returned to the  on Sunday afternoon to weed, water and harvest. The group picked about 12 boxes of cucumbers, squash, chard, tomatoes and beets, which they said they will donate.

This is the third time this summer the activists have cut the lock on the Jackson Street gate to tend the crops they planted last spring, when they .

Each time, the group has apparently cut the lock on the gate; university police then replace it with a new lock.

“Every time they cut the locks, it’s costing,” said U.C. Berkeley Police Sgt. Thomas Wing. “These are high quality industrial locks.”

And, as when the group and July 22, Sunday U.C. Police monitored the harvesting activity but made no arrests.

Occupy the Farm members said some of Sunday’s harvest went to Food Not Bombs, which cooks meals and delivers them to the needy in places such as People’s Park in Berkeley.

At 2:30 p.m., when they finished picking, some members said the group had not yet decided where to donate most of the day's harvest. 

Much of the July 22 harvest was given away outside the West Oakland BART station, said group member Ashoka Finley.
