Albany Council Chooses 4 Strategic Themes

At its Monday night meeting, the Albany City Council approved four strategic themes for the city: more park and open space; vital and inviting business area; more help for walking, biking and climate protection; and engage diverse community.

The Albany City Council on Monday set broad strategic aims for the city that give priority to open space, walking and biking, business and community diversity.

More information about the four strategic themes and other action by the council was provided in a summary distributed by the city Tuesday:

The City Council took action on the following items: 

 Albany Civics Academy Graduation: 
The Council presented graduation certificates to the Albany Civics Academy Class of 2013. The Albany Civics Academy will be held again in the Spring of 2014 and provides residents a "behind the scenes" look at the workings of local government.

• City Council Strategic Planning Follow Up: 
The Council adopted four strategic themes including: 
maximize park & open space; promote a vital and inviting business area; create a more walkable, bikeable community and mitigate climate change; engage our diverse community. 

The Council also provided direction to staff regarding goals and metrics to implement the themes. Staff will return to Council with revisions to the strategic planning work products. 

• Update on "Complete Streets" planning for Buchanan Street and San Pablo Avenue to improve safety for walking, biking and other modes of travel: 
The Council received a presentation on the "Complete Streets" planning for Buchanan Street and San Pablo Avenue. The Council provided feedback to staff regarding the conceptual plans for improving the safety of these streets for walking and biking. 

The Council agreed to postpone the following agenda items to the June 3rd Council meeting: Albany Wayfinding Plan for Bicyclists and Pedestrians and Designation of Voting Delegates, and Alternates to the League of California Cities Annual Conference. The Council reconvened in Closed Session regarding two legal matters as denoted on the Council agenda. 

The above summary is provided to serve as a brief update of action taken by the City Council as part of their Regular Meeting. The City Council meets regularly at 7:30pm on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month, at the City Hall Council Chambers - 1000 San Pablo Avenue, Albany. 

Meetings are also broadcast live on KALB Cable Channel 33, and streamed on the City's Website. 
The next regular meeting of the City Council will be held on June 3, 2013.
