Albany Pool Construction Bids To Come Aug. 25

The district will award the bid officially on Sept. 7, but today's "bid opening" event will reveal the apparent low bidder.

The Albany Unified School District is scheduled to receive bids from 19 contractors today at 2 p.m. to find out how much the Albany Pool will cost to build.

The district is required by law to give the project to the lowest bidder.

The amount of today's bids will determine how many, and what kind of, classrooms the district can add to Albany High School, where many say overcrowding is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Depending on how much money is available, there could be anywhere from three to eight classrooms on the site; financial constraints also will determine how environmentally friendly the portable units will be.

The project will officially be awarded at the Sept. 7 Board of Education meeting, after officials have a chance to make sure the plan presented by the lowest bidder meets all the project requirements.

Superintendent Marla Stephenson said today that construction is expected to begin in about two weeks.

The project to replace the former Albany pool with two new pools and add classroom space for the high school is being funded by Measure E, a $10 million bond measure voters approved in February 2008. After the recession and a troubled bond market pushed the district to delay the project, the Division of the State Architect approved a two-pool plan calling for an indoor and an outdoor pool. The plan envisions room for at least three classrooms, one of which is double-wide.
