Buchanan-Jackson Traffic Signal Work Starts Monday

Streets and sidewalks may be closed during the project, which is expected to last until Sept. 8, 2011.

A city construction project to improve the intersection of Buchanan and Jackson streets is scheduled to begin Monday.

The project will include the installation of a traffic signal, along with other safety improvements, according to a notice released last week by the city.

It will add protected left turn lane movements in the intersection; change the curbs to shorten the crosswalk to make it safer for pedestrians; and provide curb ramps compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements; and crosswalks and solar-powered speed feedback signs.

The power pole at the southeast corner of the intersection will be moved to make room for the left turn lanes and new signal equipment.

The work is scheduled to last from June 13 until Sept. 8.

Heavy equipment will be used at times. The project will include lane closures and redirection of the pedestrian path.

Ocean View School and park will remain open to the public, though there may be fewer parking spaces available, because of storage of materials and heavy equipment.

The city asks that people refrain from parking if there are "no parking" signs, and that they respect any pedestrian redirection signs.

The project is being funded by a grant from the state's Safe Routes to School Program, and the city's Measure F (2006) funds.
