City Council Elects New Albany Mayor

Joanne Wile filled the spot left open due to the recent death of Mayor Peggy Thomsen

The Albany City Council selected Vice Mayor Joanne Wile to replace the late Mayor Peggy Thomsen during the last council meeting on June 16.

City spokesperson Nicole Almaguer said, "Our City Charter tasks the Council with selecting a Council Member to serve the role of Mayor and Vice Mayor, with rotation on an annual basis."

The council elected Council member Peter Maass to fill the position of Vice Mayor. The city is currently accepting applications to fill the open seat on the city council.

The council will appoint a new council member on July 7, 2014.

The funeral service for Thomsen was held on Saturday, June 14, according to Almaguer.

Thomsen, who had been battling cancer, died in the early morning hours on June 8.
