Assemblymember Skinner to Hold Budget Summit at UC Berkeley

Oakland--Assemblymember Nancy Skinner (D - Berkeley) will be joined by Next10.org to present an interactive budget summit at the University of California, Berkeley.  Participants will be able to vote on policy options that affect the state budget in real-time with instant-response clickers.  Participants will express preferences on how much to spend on Universities, K-12 education, health services, prisons, the environment, and other state programs – as well as how to pay for them.  The event will be highlighted by an in depth discussion with the Assemblymember on real budget items coming before the Legislature. This event is being co-sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of California and the UC Berkeley Graduate Assembly.

Information on Assemblymember Skinner: Elected to represent the 14th Assembly District in 2008, Nancy Skinner currently Chairs the Assembly Rules Committee.  In the Assembly, Nancy has authored legislation to seek needed revenues for the state, increase solar energy use, improve energy efficiency, make food stamps more accessible to eligible families and expand awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit--federal dollars that could put needed cash into the households of over 800,000 eligible Californians. In FebruaryAssemblymember Skinner announced she is coauthoring legislation by Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez to make college less expensive and more accessible. AB 1500 and AB 1501, which together close the Single Sales Factor tax loophole benefitting out-of-state corporations and establish the California Middle Class Scholarship, will cut college fees by two-thirds for California students whose family income is under $150,00 but who are not eligible for financial aid.
