Other Facts

I grew up here and am an ‘82 graduate of the Albany public schools. After college and a stint as a high school math teacher in New York City, I came back to start my family in Albany because of our diverse and welcoming community. As a City Council member, my most important job will be to maintain Albany’s small town feel and quality of life.

For local business growth: Helping local business to grow helps Albany grow. I know because I launched my technology company in Albany in 1998; my first employee was an Albany High School student and I’ve employed  and trained numerous other residents since. I want City Council to set a vision for Albany that promotes local businesses. I specifically reject the notion that we need national chains; they are more concerned with their stockholders than Albany residents and can’t build our community the way local businesses can.

For affordable senior housing: Community makes us special. I will foster events that bring neighbors outside to meet and mingle. Albany works best when we promote our unique assets. We need to make it possible for community members of all ages to be able to stay in Albany. As we build senior housing, we must make sure to keep some affordable.

For increased participation in local government: I am an extremely active member within the Albany community and will reach out to people who may not normally participate in local politics. City Council must listen to residents to govern effectively. I want to leverage cost-efficient technology to gather feedback—especially from residents who can’t make it to formal City Council meetings. I welcome all input and enjoy talking with people with different views than my own to arrive at decisions that work best for Albany.

Please support me as I work to promote our local businesses, help seniors stay in town and foster wider participation in local government. Vote Ulan McKnight for Albany City Council.
