Attention: Road Work Ahead!

Albany's tax dollars are at work, paving roads and upgrading BART.

If it seems like you’re hitting roadwork at every turn around town, you’re just about right. City officials confirmed that there’s an unusual amount of construction in the streets at the moment.

“Albany’s voters have been very supportive of public works,” said . “We are blessed here in terms of support.”

Here’s what’s happening and when it should be done:

Santa Fe and Peralta: Paving has just started on the Santa Fe Avenue block north of Solano Avenue and begins this week on two blocks of Peralta Avenue, from Solano south to Sonoma Avenue. Crews are removing and replacing pavement and upgrading handicapped access ramps that don’t meet code.

The work should take only about a week at each site, said the city’s engineering consultant, Greg Jacobs, but those days could be spread out over more than a week to maximize the use of contractors.

San Gabriel: The paving on this street near the middle school has just been finished.

Key Route: On the block from Marin to Solano sewer work is 95 percent done, Jacobs said.

Spokane Avenue and parts of Brighton and Portland avenues nearby have been getting upgrades to the water mains by East Bay Municipal Utility District. San Gabriel also had work done by EBMUD before it was repaved.

Jacobs said the city tries to coordinate with the utilities to upgrade gas, water and sewer lines before paving gets done. Jacobs said the Spokane work is a week or two away from being done, ending in early November.

Ohlone Greenway & Masonic Avenue: on the BART support pillars. There are no street closures, but parts of Ohlone Greenway have been closed, some lanes of parking on Masonic have been eliminated and the bike and pedestrian path has been relocated to the parking lane. The work between Brighton and Portland is scheduled to last until February; the portion from Solano to Dartmouth Street will take until September 2012.

Buchanan Street: At the corner of work was just completed on the traffic signal to add left-turn arrows.

Pierce Street has been getting repaved as well. The northern end is getting a full rip-out and repavement, while the center section, from the apartment towers to Calhoun Street has just gotten a surface treatment and the southern end is getting a level of repair in between, Jacobs said. That work should be done by early December, weather permitting, he said.

And then of course, there’s the construction … Check here for updates.
