Statement of Qualification: Jonathan Knight, Board of Education

Knight, 45, shared his candidate statement with Albany Patch.

This school board candidate statement would have appeared in election materials this fall. But with just three candidates filing for three open seats, Albany Unified School District will not have to hold an election and Knight will be seated along with Allan Maris and incumbent Paul Black.

I've lived in the Bay Area for 24 years, and my wife and I have lived in Albany for nine. We own a house on Santa Fe Avenue, and our children (one in kindergarten and one in second grade) both attend school in Albany.

As a university teacher, biologist and science writer, I believe in public education. I'm grateful for the efforts and dedication of Albany's parents, teachers and staff, who work hard to make sure that Albany schools not only excel academically, but also foster creativity and critical thought. These skills will help all our children lead happy and productive lives.

I have been a volunteer writing coach at Albany Middle School and a regular helper in our elementary school library. I also serve on the Marin PTA Traffic Safety Committee. Along the way I've met many energetic and committed parents and teachers, and I look forward to meeting many more.

If you vote for me, I will work hard to support our teachers and to serve the whole community. I will listen to the concerns of everyone involved. Together, we can keep Albany schools great.
