Yes! I can't wait. Peggy, I still have 9 swims left on my old card...... just kidding!
Steve Chervitz Trutane January 31, 2012 at 02:08 am
I saw the shimmering reflections of water on the inside walls when i was at Mem park on Sat. :)

Almost 4% "processing fee" to sign up for anything online. And the BS begins....
Amy Smolens January 31, 2012 at 04:38 am
That fee "is paid directly to the online service provider. You may continue to register in person at the Albany Aquatic Center or Adult Education office using credit cards, check or cash." So you have options.

I was very disappointed to read the online brochure and find there is no exercise class scheduled for older adults or people with disabilities. Dozens of us who attended classes at the old Albany Pool have been eagerly awaiting the new pool's completion and looking forward to classes designed to help us keep fit.
Peggy McQuaid January 31, 2012 at 01:55 pm
There is a water calisthenics class on Monday and Wednesday, 8:15 - 9:15 a.m. The brochure states, " An instructor led water exercise class set to music, integrating range ofmovement, balance, stretching and aerobic activity. Class is in the shallow water and open to all levels. No swimming ability required. There is also a wide variety of class listed to meet the needs of many. This are the initial programs of the pool. The number and type of classes can grow over time.

Every time I drive by the pool, I see the water and I get a surge of adrenaline. Can't wait can't wait can't wait!
Sylvia Russell January 31, 2012 at 04:03 pm
And no calisthenics class on Fridays! Why?

Richard, I've been to several bike races and centuries where small clubs use similar online services to process fees for them. Many small organizations don't have the resources to build a website to handle financial transactions. Since the pool is new, and the school district is strapped for funds, I suspect they chose to outsource this service for now. Maybe that will change.
However, don't be misled--it may be the case that the El Cerrito pool or the YMCA just hides these fees and passes them along to other users. In a similar situation, the owner of my local corner grocery complains that the credit card fees charged to business owners mean that cash-paying customers subsidize credit card customers. Likewise, I suspect that if not for online fees, cash-paying pool users would end up subsidizing online payers. In any case, this is not a show-stopper for me. I'll just pay when I get to the pool. Or i'll pay the fee online. It's not a big deal for me.

The class schedule looks great. Good job!
Larry Craighill February 1, 2012 at 02:02 am
Wow. Richard could benefit from some soothing exercise. I recommend swimming. Chill, and get some laps in. It'll do you wonders.

Well, isn't this grand! I started working at the old Albany Pool in 1951 as a teacher and later on as a life guard. I was there all 4 years that I was a student at AHS. (We actually were at AHS 5 years because 8th grade was there too). Even to this day when I smell chlorine I get visual flash backs of those days. Good times!

El Cerrito does not charge a fee for online registration and payment.
So who is going to be the first customer tomorrow? Did the swim teams and staff enjoy the pool this weekend?
Michael Barnes February 13, 2012 at 02:16 am
Ira, my son has been hired as a lifeguard, and he was at all-day training sessions both days this weekend. Sounded like work, not fun, but it was necessary to get everyone trained.

Hi there - This doesn't seem like an appropriate announcement for Albany or Berkeley Patch. 1) theRead More category is Announcements/Around Town and these events are all in Marin 2) Patch's "Terms of Use" say "You may use this Service solely for personal and non-commercial purposes. That is to say: You can’t use the Service to make a living unless you enter into a separate agreement with us that says you can." This is clearly solely a commercial venture, not a neighbor of ours or local organization providing a community service and charging for the service. 3) I went to the Novato website and saw this listing: "Ettiquette (sic) Series for Kids - 17737 Ages: 7 Years to 11 Years - Residents $150.00 - Non-residents $163.00" 4) These items push our items of local interest down and out of sight. Especially now that there is no box indicating the stories with the most recent comments, as there used to be on the Patch front page, out of sight does mean out of mind. Charles, what are your thoughts here? Thanks.

I've been waiting for the right time to donate my son's old bike he used in middle/high school. It'sRead More been hanging on hooks in the garage and this seems like a great time to give it up!
christopher papazoglow June 7, 2013 at 10:30 am
Can you please post their hours / days of operation ? As i recall, they're only open afternoons aRead More few days a week, and it won't do to just leave donations outside ( they'll be scavenged ). And i was not able to find the info online.
AS&R - Albany Strollers & Rollers June 7, 2013 at 11:20 am
Thanks, Christopher. Open Community Hours are Friday, Saturday, Sunday 12-6pm so anytime those daysRead More are definitely fine. They're there (84 Bolivar Drive - Aquatic Park) most of the day Wednesdays and Thursdays for Youth Classes and the doors are locked. I just spoke to Amber Rich and she asked you to call them at 510 644 2577 and let them know what time is good for you and they will be sure to be there. Thanks for your generosity!
Dover June 5, 2013 at 02:47 pm
Thanks for the update but I am worried. This is very distressing. How will Eric and Tarina be ableRead More to afford their annual lengthy hipster vacation if they have to cough up lawyer fees? I am sure they were expecting that UCB (aka the rest of us) would pay Mr. Siegel's bill. Now they may have to resort to staying home and eating Top Ramen out of their charming and cheerful "made in Asia by small children but they're not slaving for 14 hours a day in front of our faces so we don't care" ceramic bowls. Oh noes! Bad, bad, very, very bad news.

David, thanks for the alert to the judge's decision.
