Albany Pool Could Open in January

A small group took a flashlight tour of the Albany Aquatic Center on Wednesday night. Click the "Keep me posted" button at the bottom of this story for pool updates from Albany Patch.

As the sun set Wednesday evening, a small group of neighbors, officials and other interested parties took a tour of the construction site.

Construction manager Tom Murphy said the pool could be open to the public in January.

Murphy said the pool will be ready for plaster on Dec. 23, but that the holidays would delay the final steps in construction.

"We don't want to be doing that [plastering] going into Christmas," he said, "and the following week there's a labor shortage."

Rather than rushing the plaster job and the filling of the pools, project manager Devin Kokotas, of Bollo Construction, said the construction team will wait until the first week of January to finish the job.

The indoor pool will be filled within an hour of the plasterwork, he said. The outdoor pool either will be filled the same week, or will take place the second week of January.

The plastering and filling of each pool will entail 16-18 hours of work, said Kokotas.

"It all takes place in one very long day," he said.

Pool Director Amanda Garcia said she still has 14 days of training to complete, as well as staff training, before workers are ready to begin.

This will include learning how to manipulate the pool chemicals and equipment; getting certification from the Health Department; and acquiring the facility's operating license.

Garcia said she's hired head lifeguards and instructors, but still is looking for life guards, and swim and water fitness instructors. (Job descriptions are online here.)

She said pool staff likely would include a minimum of eight to 10 people per day, and would fluctuate seasonally.
