The Albany High School Varsity Volleyball team took on Sir Francis Drake in a rematch of last year’s . In that match Albany came out victorious and looked to continue their dominance over the Pirates. Tuesday night they did just that, defeating Drake 3-0.

Times have changed, as is to be expected, with both teams. Albany lost fewer players than Drake did; however Albany did lose a coach. Last year’s assistant coach Lynn Hall now leads the Pirates of San Anselmo.

However, Hall’s time on the Cougar’s bench could do little to stop the potent attack of Albany. After the first and closest set ended 25-22 Albany, the Cougars turned up the heat and won the final two sets 25-18 and 25-11. Key blocks by junior Amber Erhahon and senior Mia Jauregui aided in keeping the opposition’s score low.

As always, senior Kyra Holt helped propel her team to victory. Her spikes slammed into opponents, in one instance finding its way to the roof via rebound off the floor.

Following this victory, the Albany Cougars improve to 8-1, having only dropped one of the 22 sets they’ve played during the young season.

Over the weekend, the Cougars will host their own tournament. Following the event, Albany High heads to Redwood High to take on last year’s Division II NCS Champions in what should be a highly contested match. Their next match is Tuesday, Sept. 18 against St. Mary’s.
