The new Gen7 modular classrooms will be ready for occupancy in July 2011. Construction of the new Albany High School Aquatic Center commenced on September 27, 2010. Current Status: Demolition, clearing, and rough grading activities were completed by the end of November. Underground utility work adjacent to the AHS multi-purpose room was completed during the month of December. The digging of the outdoor pool was completed in January and shotcrete of the outdoor pool was completed by mid-March. Excavation and pouring of footings, grade beams, and the surge pit is on-going. To date, over 800 cubic yards of concrete have been placed. The concrete block wall that will separate the mechanical area from the pool building has been scaffolded and block laying will start as soon as the weather allows. The first pieces of structural steel have also been set in place. As the reviewing agency, the Division of the State Architect (DSA) is required to approve all structural modifications to the approved plans that have been recommended by the Structural Engineer of Record. This process is routine and does not impact the construction schedule.

Upcoming Construction Activities: The next activities will include completion of the footings, and grade beams. Once this work is complete, slab on grade work for the pool building and the digging of the indoor pool will begin.

Gen7 Classrooms: The four Gen7 classrooms are currently in production at the American Modular facility in Manteca and will be delivered to the high school site in May. The sitework plans for the classrooms were approved by the Division of the State Architect on February 15, 2011. McCrary Construction is currently pricing the sitework plans. A $100,000 allowance is included within McCrary’s existing contract for classroom sitework.

Schedule:  The new Gen7classrooms will be ready for occupancy in July 2011. The construction of the four new Gen7 classrooms will happen concurrently with the construction of the aquatic center. Pool completion is scheduled for October 2011. The overall construction project is approximately 30 days behind schedule due to the extremely wet weather in November and December. A dry January allowed a significant amount of work to occur; however, the project remains behind schedule as a result of the wet weather in November and December. Rainfall in mid-February through March has once again impacted construction activities.

Budget: The project remains well within the $10 million Albany High School Aquatic Center budget. Please direct any questions regarding the construction of the Albany High School Aquatic Center to Superintendent Marla Stephenson at mstephenson@ausdk12.org.
