Updated at 1:30 p.m. to include statement from the principal:

The principal of Marin Elementary School, David Kumamoto, will be leaving at the end of the current school year, the Albany Unified School District said in a brief announcement Wednesday.

Serving as Interim Principal will be Alexia Ritchie, who worked 20 years as an Albany classroom teacher in regular and special education and who now serves as Principal of MacGregor High School, the district said.

No mention was made of the reason for Kumamoto's departure.

On Thursday, the school sent Patch the following statement from Kumamoto that was distributed also on the Marin etree and weekly newsletter:

Dear Marin Families,

It is hard to believe that the school year is ending in a couple of weeks, so I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their countless hours of volunteering in a variety of ways at Marin School. This wonderful community is truly what makes Marin a special place.

At the end of this school year, I will be leaving Marin and taking a new position as the Principal of Calistoga Junior/Senior High School. During my time at Marin I have enjoyed getting to know you and your children. I will cherish my time spent here.

Sincerely,
David Kumamoto

"We would like to thank him for his service to the students and community at Marin," the district statement said.

The school has seen high turnover in the Marin principal's chair in recent years. Kumamoto, who began the job in the 2010-11 school year, was the fourth principal since 2007, when long-serving Principal Marian Rothschild retired after 18 years.
