School Board Eyes Tentative Contract for SEIU Union

The Albany school board on Tuesday night will consider approval of new 3-year union contract containing a 4-percent raise for maintenance, custodial, food service and transportation employees.

The Albany school board agenda Tuesday night includes approval of a tentative contract agreement between the Albany Unified School District and the 35 employees represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

The union represents maintenance, custodial, food service and transportation employees.

Like the recently approved teachers' contract, the SEIU agreement calls for a 4 percent raise retroactive to July 1 in a new three-year contract. And like the teachers' pact, the contract states that the district's cost of health and welfare benefits for the 2013-14 year is equivalent to an additional 1.6 percent in compensation.

The district will continue to pay 100 percent of the employees' health insurance premiums.

The salary boost will cost the district an additional $33,011 in 2013-14, according to a district table in the agenda packet.

The board approval is scheduled to occur during the board's regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The agenda also includes an hour-long discussion and review of possible ways to reduce K-3 class sizes.
