St. Mary's: Looking Back in Our History
Below is a circa 1917 photo of grammar school students doing calisthenics on the playing field, today's Brady Park.
From 1903 until 1969, Peralta Park was home to a boys' grammar school, first known as St. Joseph's Academy and then as St. Mary's Grammar School. It was first housed in the magnificent Peralta Park Hotel and later in Cronin Hall. The grammar school Brothers' faculty and boys were joined by the high school community when it moved to Berkeley from Oakland in 1927. had a boarding student department from 1927 until 1969. St. Joseph's Hall housed both grammar and high school boarders over the years.
