Video: Take the Walking School Bus on Wednesday For Health, Environment
Students are encouraged to get to school on their own steam tomorrow for International Walk and Roll to School Day. The Albany Strollers & Rollers will be at local schools installing bike lights and teaching maintenance.
It's an age-old tradition, scurrying up to the bus stop just in time to join classmates on their way to school. In Albany, where public schools don't use traditional school buses because none of the commutes are all that far, the concept has a new twist. Kids rush to meet the "Walking School Bus," a group of students and parents who walk along Santa Fe Avenue from the northern edge of town to Marin Elementary School.
Encouraged by the city's Transportation Department, the Marin School PTA and the Albany Strollers & Rollers, participants in the walking school bus learn the benefits of eschewing automobiles in favor of a walk with friends.
