The 2016 Super Bowl will be played in the 49ers' new stadium in Santa ClaraNational Football League owners announced today the 2016 Super Bowl will be played in the 49ers' new stadium in Santa Clara.

The Santa Clara site beat out Miami for the rights to host Super Bowl L (that's the Roman numeral for 50).

The game will shine a spotlight on Santa Clara and the 49ers' new stadium, but it will also bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity to San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area, its backers say.

It'll be the first time since 1985 the football championship will be played in the Bay Area. That year, the 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins at Stanford Stadium.
