Earlier this summer, we heard from some Albany parents about an extensive plant theft at the Marin School garden that left very little to tend.
In June, thieves snuck into the Marin Elementary School garden and dug up dozens of plants from the raised and attached beds near Santa Fe Avenue.
Every tomato plant on campus was taken (about 20 total), along with seven to eight tomato cages, nearly all of the strawberries (about 12 plants), and Wilbur Obata's bed full of marigolds, perhaps three dozen in all. Various other vegetables, herbs and flowers are also missing.
Parent Stephanie Megibben later let us know that, due to community support, the garden was up and running again.
"The wonderful people at the Ocean View Community Garden, route: {:controller=>"listings", :action=>"show", :id=>"ocean-view-community-organic-garden"} --> donated several extra heirloom tomato starters that one of their best gardeners had nurtured from seed. We were able to plant them (in June) to replace the stolen plants, along with some extra cucumber and bean seedlings that were donated by one of our volunteers.
