How 'Albany Local' Can You Be?

The city-sponsored "Albany Local Week" Sept. 22-28 encourages residents to focus their activities in Albany for a week. Businesses are offering specials, and residents can compete for the Uber Albany Local Cup by logging activities on a scorecard.

For the third year in a row, Albany residents are being invited to immerse themselves in the community as part of "Albany Local Week" – and to compete for local fame as the winner of a permanent place on the Über Albany Local Cup.

Residents are urged to shop, play and participate in other activities for the week of Sept. 22-28. Several businesses are offering discounts, and citizens can keep track of their participation on the Official Albany Local Week Scorecard to see who wins lasting recognition by having his or her name inscribed on the Uber Albany Local Cup, which is kept on display at the Albany Community Center.

"The City of Albany Recreation & Community Services Department is challenging residents to see how much they can do, shop, eat and play within Albany's square mile the week of September 22-28," says the city's Albany Local Week webpage

"ALBANY LOCAL WEEK
is an opportunity to discover and celebrate what Albany has to offer while supporting our local businesses and organizations. Local businesses are offering Albany Local Week Specials and there are a number of local events taking place during the week. "

Residents can score points for a wide range of activities, including shopping locally, attending local events, seeing an Albany dentist and volunteering among other activities.

The winner for the first two years of the contest was uber Albanian Peggy McQuaid, who described her approach in an interview with Patch after her first victory in 2011, when she racked up 10,930 points.

All those who turn in their scorecards by Oct. 4 will receive a "limited edition prize" (yet to be determined), and the winner will be honored at the Oct. 7 City Council meeting, according to the Recreation and Community Services Department.
