Debut of Berkeley Half Marathon – Finish Line in Albany

The first Berkeley Half Marathon takes place Sunday, beginning in front of Berkeley's Old City Hall, passing the UC Berkeley campus and going down University Avenue before looping around the Marina and finishing in Albany at Golden Gate Fields.

If you see a flock of runners streaming toward Golden Gate Fields in Albany on Sunday, it'll be the inaugural Berkeley Half Marathon.

The 13.1-mile course is designed to be a kind of sight-seeing tour of Berkeley and a little bit of Albany, beginning at 8 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park and heading to the UC Berkeley campus before going down University and looping around the Berkeley Marina and Cesar Chavez Park and finishing on the Buchanan Street Extension at the Golden Gate Fields racetrack in Albany.

The Berkeley Half Marathon is also a fundraiser, whose beneficiaries include three Berkeley nonprofits: Berkeley Public Schools Fund, Berkeley Food and Housing Project, and Berkeley Partner for Parks.

Two other, shorter races will be run for those who aren't inclined for half marathon.

The "Bearable 10 Mile" also begins at Civic Center Park at 8:30 a.m., goes past UC Berkeley, down University for a loop around the Marina and Cesar Chavez Park before heading to Golden Gate Fields.

The "Berkeley 10 Kilometer" (6.2 miles) also begins at Civic Center Park at 8:45 a.m., goes past UC Berkeley, down University to the Marina and Cesar Chavez Park before heading to Golden Gate Fields.

The race is produced by Jumping Fences, which also produces the San Francisco Marathon.
