Boards and Commissions

Here's a list of all the boards and commissions in the city of Albany.

    Parks & Recreation Commission

    This commission handles issues relating to public recreation, park facilities and landscaping. It is also concerned with reviewing the Master Plan for recreation, and encouraging public agencies and private parties to develop recreational facilities and programs that benefit the citizens of Albany. Of the seven members, five members are appointed by the City Council for a two-year term and two members are appointed by the Board of Education for a staggered two-year term. The commission selects one member to serve as chairperson and one to serve as vice-chair. The commission meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Edith Stone Room at Albany Community Center.


    Planning & Zoning Commission

    This commission advises the City Council on matters concerning physical development. Members are appointed by the City Council for a two-year term. The commission selects one member to serve as chairperson and one to serve as vice-chairperson. The commission meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.


    Traffic & Safety Commission

    This commission oversees matters relating to traffic flow, safety and management, and transportation policy. Members are appointed by the City Council for a two-year term. The police chief, fire chief and city engineer serve as ex-officio members of the commission. Commission members select one member to serve as chairperson. The commission meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.


      Social & Economic Justice Commission

      This commission is concerned with the research and analysis of data and opinions on social and environmental issues affecting the welfare of residents. It also makes recommendations to the City Council on actions to be taken to tackle these issues. The commission consists of seven members; five are appointed by the City Council for a two-year term, and two are appointed by the Albany School Board. The commission meets odd months on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. (Check the city calendar for details.)


      BOARDS

      Civil Service Board

      This board creates rules and regulations concerning the selection, promotion, re-employment, re-instatement and transfer of employees in the Classified Service of the City (mostly police and fire) in agreement with ordinances adopted by the City Council. It also conducts examinations for the selection and promotion of these personnel. Members are appointed by the council for a two-year term. Board members select one member to serve as chairperson. The board meets as needed on the first Wednesday of each odd month at 6 p.m.

      Library Board

      This board advises the City Council on matters that relate to the Albany branch of the Alameda County Library system. Members are appointed by the City Council for a two-year term. Board members select one member to serve as chairperson. The board meets on the fourth Wednesday of each odd month at 7 p.m. in the Edith Stone Room at the Albany Community Center.


      OTHER BODIES

      Tree Task Force

      This task force was responsible for the formulation of an integrated tree policy and revising the tree list. (inactive)

      Disaster Policy Advisory Group

      This group helps the City Council in creating and enacting ordinances and regulations needed to facilitate the city's response to emergency situations. Example of their efforts include a local and State Emergency proclamation, mutual aid agreements or workers compensation benefits for volunteers. The consists of the following members: the vice mayor who chairs the group; the assistant director of Emergency Services (vice chair); representatives from city departments; two representatives from neighborhoods participating in the city's disaster preparedness program; representatives from the Albany Unified School District; and representatives from civic, community and other organizations whose participation is deemed necessary or appropriate.
