@Alan - Yes, it was - Albany Strollers & Rollers' bicycle valets parked around 90 bikes, many ofRead More them longtail/with trailer or child seats/cargo bikes! Thanks to Bua Luang for sponsoring our Bicycle Valet Parking service again! Street Level Cycles, in their 6th year providing free bike tuneups at the A&GF, tuned up 35 bicycles and showed people how to maintain their own bikes. Thanks to all of you who rode to the festival!! I'll try and get a few photos added to this article.

It was a good showing at the festival! Although we missed out on the compost (apparently more than 2Read More hours too late), we did find a 3rd vendor to compare solar panel pricing and options against the larger companies. The bike corral looked like a well-used option, too.
The UC Berkeley lot at San Pablo Avenue and Monroe Street in Albany where Occupy the Farm protesters staged an occupation and planted crops on the weekends of May 11-12 and May 18-19, 2013.

As an Albany gardener, I read "laboriously broken...hard soil" as pure, hard fact. I'mRead More thinking clay here, folks. If one really wanted to editorialize, you could talk about directing all that dirt-breaking occupier energy toward something positive (edible schoolyards, or helping seniors and others tend urban infill gardens). If you wanted to editorialize a bit more, you could question why this reportedly extraordinary lone patch of East Bay "class 1 soil" requires piles of occupier-imported dirt. And if you wanted to dig deeper into the definition of class 1 soil-- which includes optimum climate conditions, by some accounts-- you might wonder how a small parcel along a foggy highway zone slated for intensified uses (to combat environmentally harmful urban sprawl) could qualify as "class 1." Whether hard pan or AAA finest kind humus, this plot of land is embraced by Albany's thorough, inclusive, give-and-take democratic planning process. It's not the dominion of self-appointed dictators.

@montymarket - you seem to keep missing a number of salient points here. First off, the propertyRead More belongs to UC. They only have to work out a deal with the city of Albany in order to move forward - not with a minority of disgruntled would-be farmers. That deal has been reached, with much opportunity for the public to speak out - and they have. In fact, in the recent election they voted in a slate of folks who support development as planned on that plot of land, and rejected two perhaps well-intentioned folks who supported OTF. It sure looks like a solid majority of the local folks like the idea of the planned market and senior housing. And, as has been kindly pointed out on other related threads, there are plenty of other ways that people interested in productively growing veggies in the community can do so. You're quite in the minority, though I commend you for perhaps being well-intentioned, if not particularly effective.

Bart Grossman at the movies. I'd give that movie 3 carrots up. Something like, "They pavedRead More paradise and put up a parking lot..." Or "The Grapes of Wrath." Agricultural theme. Or about being a radical in youth and turning into a Mr Barnes in older age. That Sprouts Farmers Market sure looks like any old strip mall, big-box set in the middle of a parking lot. Pity is the only architect on P&Z lives and works too close to the project and is conflicted-out. At least it's more bicycle friendly (thanks to the lawsuit).

That's what happened this morning. There were about 15 police, one tractor-driver, and noRead More protestors.

Why don't these farmers take up a collection and purchase the property? Then they can plant whateverRead More they want and nobody can do anything about it.

Has anyone ever noticed how the Occutards re-appear whenever our current administration is facedRead More with any type of negative media publicity?
Occupy the Farm activists maintained their latest occupation of a UC Berkeley lot in Albany for a second day, Sunday, May 19, 2013.

And as expected it is being plowed under this morning

The new site has a very nice appearance. I notice a few minuses, though, which are: 1. Inability toRead More reply to a specific post. It's a major hassle to have to scroll through all the posts to see replies, and it is often not clear which post is being replied to, etc. In fact, the ability to reply to a specific post is a key feature to making comments of any value. 2. A major plus is the "recommend" feature. However, it should also include a "thumbs-down" feature to truly be of use - such as the (shudder) Chron uses, "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" symbols. 3. I also miss the home page column showing the recent posts, which quickly linked to a given article. Thanks!
Charles Burress (Editor) May 17, 2013 at 11:52 pm
David, thanks for that clear explanation. Now I can file a more detailed report about what appearsRead More to be two separate, though related issues.
David Sanger May 17, 2013 at 09:48 pm
there were two things you could do that I cannot see now. One is subscribe to updates on a post, ie.Read More if it was edited etc. The second was to follow the comments so that you'd get an email notification every to a comment was made. You didn't have to have made a comment to follow comments. Currently all I see is that you can set a profile option to get email notifications on all threads where you make a comment. That's not the same as the above.

Am I the only person out there that thinks this whole thing is ugly? I was born and raised in thisRead More area, pretty liberal. But really, is this what we do? See how much the neighbors make? Yuck...
Stephanie Travis April 2, 2013 at 04:11 am
This is sloppy work. Besides the point made by Ms. Owen, another example are the statements in theRead More narrative on median. I assume the comment that "The data shows that the median household income in Albany ranges from $70,000 to well over $100,000"; actually should be that the medians for the individual block areas vary from $70,000 to over $100,000", as medians are fixed points and do not range. Additionally, according to this material the lowest median is $38,000, not $70,000. The statement about the Albany Hills Park neighborhoods again, is incorrect, as once again a median is a fixed point, not a range. The misunderstanding by the author as to the meaning of something as basic as a median casts doubt on this whole piece. I would like to know what database was used to arrive at these numbers. I can't remember the exact number but I think something like 40% of Albany residents are renters. Did the data source pick up the incomes of the home owners or the residents?

Sorry, OTF wasn't the direct cause, but they went door-to-door and to BART stations to spreadRead More misinformation about the the "mega-mall". I'm not sure how much this contributed to Albany residents signing the petition to put it up for a vote, but it had to have had an impact? At any rate, the lawsuit, delay caused by referendum, city politics, etc all contributed in the end result.

Now if only the City of Albany would grow some cojones and kick out the illegal homelessRead More encampments. The bulb is NOT the right spot for the city to run a homeless shelter out of. They need professional help. Their dogs could have a better life living within a normal home setting. It's a joke how the city dances around the druggies and nuts that have taken over the bulb.
