This is why we can't have nice things.
D. Mehrten May 18, 2013 at 09:04 am
Mmm. I'm a member of the public also, and it's probably a good thing I won't get my hands on them,Read More as I might have to "express myself" too.
Dover May 17, 2013 at 10:26 pm
They weren't vandals, they were junior activists in training. It's a public school so it belongs toRead More them and they are entitled to express themselves in any way they see fit. ;-)

99.9% of people driving drunk and causing fatalities and accidents have a blood alcohol level wayRead More over .08 This attempt to legislate away DUI is not evidence based.
Borris Batanov May 14, 2013 at 08:42 pm
Why don't they come up with a legal limit for the THC in all the stoners out there?
Michael poland May 14, 2013 at 06:25 pm
No. .08 is DUI and .05 is not. Yes, a person may have had a drink, but would not show impairmentRead More unless mixed with some drugs (legal or illegal).
Kathryn Javandel May 15, 2013 at 01:39 pm
@montymarket - I agree that the same laws apply to everyone. The counter-protesters did not put anyRead More tables, chairs, BBQs, ice chests, sunshades, camping equipment or other personal belongings on the sidewalk (or anyplace else.) I daresay humans have a superior right to be standing on a sidewalk than inanimate objects.
montymarket May 15, 2013 at 10:26 am
"People do not have a first amendment right to obstruct the sidewalks." Judging from theRead More picture above, clearly this group of demonstrators is exercising a first amendment right to assemble, associate, and express themselves freely: however, from the looks of it, while they do not appear to be blocking the sidewalk so much, the photographer apparently is not on the sidewalk but in the field: trespass per se? If you've seen strikers on sidewalks, must keep moving... wait, wait, we're being informed that the group in the photo is the counter-protest! Whoops. The officer in the parked police car behind may be issuing a warning for them to keep moving, nothing to see here. Not sure. Otherwise, arguably could evidence selective enforcement, especially if one group of protesters allowed while the other not. Just saying...equal protection and all.
Dover May 14, 2013 at 11:40 pm
I can read, Christopher.
Charles Burress (Editor) May 12, 2013 at 03:03 pm
You're right! Thanks for catching the error. It's been corrected.

"A spokeswoman for the Contra Costa County Superior Court said the hearing is now set for MarchRead More 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Richmond courthouse." I think you mean May 21.
Sharon Bonnifield May 12, 2013 at 03:25 pm
The dog hurs for Memorial Park in section B is very confussing. In the dog area there are signsRead More posted, but each one has dif hours. Also the web site has 10am to 8pm everyday. I don't know why the dogs can't be there from 8am to 9pom or at least 8:30 pm everyday. The park is open til 10pm and events go on to 11 or later at times. Also I feel our police officers have better things to do than tell people to leave the park with the dog. Sharon
Alexander Sinclair Merenkov May 11, 2013 at 12:54 am
No, I think thats incredibly ridiculous. This sounds like something Walnut Creek police would do.Read More Hassle people for no reason so it looks like their services are needed.
andrew sullivan May 10, 2013 at 05:45 pm
am i the only one who thinks it's absurd that police are following up on calls to boot dog ownersRead More from the park 15 minutes before the start time? i am growing increasingly suspicious of the competence of the force to prioritize calls and allocate resources.

The Partition area, wide opened, is approx 12inches in height. A survivor said she squeezed to getRead More thru, so obviously it was not opened all the way by the driver to allow the women an escape-access! Also, Ive read that 3 survivors escaped thru the right back door..., so why couldnt the others? In the TV News pics, the Survivors sat calmly on the side of the road... looked numb & out of it? I would have been jumping, yelling, trying to stop traffic to help us! It was hard for me to see them just sitting there quietly..., were they intoxicated? In shock? I wish the driver had, in a 2 second flash, opened the Partition all the way down as he "jumped out to save his skin" & gone to the right side to secure the door open. The flames were left-sided rear. OR was he thinkg that more air/ O2 would have lit up fire more, OR was his electricity out by the Fire? DID he try breakg a rear window open w/ his shoe at least? All of it is puzz'ling & a tragedy that has so so many unanswered questions. We count on the Captain to help us..., but remember the sunk Greek cruise ship?? Captain got off & rowed away first!! My heart goes out to the deceased here, and survivors as well.

Mylinzi: I'd like to point out that Filipinos and Filipinas can definitely party and deeeefinitelyRead More drink, nurse or not.
Livermoronian May 10, 2013 at 12:56 pm
Why couldn't they open the door? That truly sucks, like they were locked inside their own deathRead More chamber. Had to crawl over and through the barrier between them and the driver???? I think that area should have the old fashioned pull up locks back there. The electric locks could fail if it was an electrical fire. Perhaps a mounted fire extinguisher inside the passenger area would have helped. New regulations in the 2014 limos!

"Funding for extra enforcement efforts comes through a $29,000 grant from the California OfficeRead More of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on roadways through special enforcement and public awareness efforts." It serves the residents of Albany. Thank you Albany Police for trying to keep our families safe.
christopher papazoglow May 7, 2013 at 01:22 am
Again, "focusing their efforts" on specific violations. Whom and what does this serve?
Ricardø May 3, 2013 at 06:33 pm
I think we can agree that crime is out of control and unless immediate action is taken now, we canRead More expect total anarchy. We must not allow this to happen. I call for a special election to put a STRONG mayor in office so we can turn Albany into a Police State to stop crime in its tracks.
christopher papazoglow May 3, 2013 at 04:14 pm
Good to see "case report taken" in so many instances. Suggests, to me, that Patch isRead More getting more in-depth in their reportage. :)
montymarket May 3, 2013 at 12:28 pm
Is that area code in Nigeria, perchance?
Rick Suber May 3, 2013 at 04:37 am
Wow! This sounds like a movie! I am an authorized GE Protect America Home Security Dealer and IRead More must say, its SO IMPORTANT to be protected. For those looking to secure their home, dial this number for information about how to get free equipment and activation on a new state of the art security system: 520-4PROTECT (520-477-6832)
Alan Eckert May 2, 2013 at 07:08 pm
There are actually a number of frozen positions on the police force that have not and cannot beRead More filled right now.
don May 2, 2013 at 08:43 am
RICARDO. WE LIKE OUR CITY. PLEASE MOVE WE LIKE OUR POLICE HERE HUH THANKS
Ricardø May 2, 2013 at 03:11 am
Now where was I, oh yes, turning Albany into a militarized police State. It doesn't seem I amRead More getting much traction with this. What's up with you people, HUH?
Dover May 1, 2013 at 02:12 pm
Reluctantly and slowly, yes.
Ricardø April 30, 2013 at 02:10 am
I think it's time to turn Albany into a Police State with a 1-strike law. If you mess up, you WILLRead More be taken down and taken out. I wish it hadn't come to this, but it has. My first order of business if I am elected as your Mayor would give the police a shoot to kill order to deter crime. We must take justice to the criminals. Thank you for your careful consideration.
D. Mehrten April 30, 2013 at 01:16 am
I've noticed vehicles intentionally left wide open so thieves will 1) assume there is nothing ofRead More worth within or 2) at least not break locks and windows in their search. An interesting solution. A car was abandoned in front of my house recently and I was stunned at how easily, quickly and quietly the tow-truck driver (Albany police looking on) opened it up. It does help if you have a garage to put your car in if you use it and close the garage door. I went to some lengths to buy a car that would fit in my tiny garage, and I sure am glad I did. Crime in Albany has worsened in the 17 years I've been here but even back then cars were favorite targets.
montymarket April 29, 2013 at 03:11 pm
In the old days people weren't carrying expensive laptops, cell phones, i-pads around with them 24 xRead More 7 or leaving them in one of their cars. Hardly ever any reports of stolen radios out of the dashboard anymore. Thieves are opportunistic and have evolved. They cruise around looking for the car with the stuff just sitting inside and can pop the lock on a car door or break a window in seconds and be gone with a backpack full of lightweight electronics that are easy to fence.
John April 27, 2013 at 12:14 pm
To me the most "stand out" item in Senior A. Tude's comment is that there was no ATTRead More coverage. Without meaning to break this thread too badly...when are we ever going to get proper cell service in the Albany area??
Dover April 27, 2013 at 12:32 am
That would be "you're" not "your," but your (not you're) poor attempt at sarcasmRead More is duly noted. ;-) What officer? I'm referring to the dispatcher.
Brian Parsley April 26, 2013 at 11:12 pm
Ok Dover what do you think the Officer should have done, I mean your an expert right?
Ricardø April 25, 2013 at 03:07 am
This kind of criminal activity has to stop and we WILL make it stop. Under my administration IRead More would advocate for a ZERO TOLERANCE to this kind of despicable behavior. I would give the police orders to shot to kill these out-of-towners who pose a threat to our gentle community.
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) April 23, 2013 at 01:22 pm
An update from a St. Mary's Official: "FYI – The cell phone was recovered. Apparently,Read More the student who had taken the bag which contained the cell phone, mistook the duffel as his own. After discovering his mistake, he returned the bag to the rightful owner."
Dover April 23, 2013 at 12:28 pm
"Pitbull attack – At 10:59 a.m., a caller reported being attacked and taken to the groundRead More by three pitbulls who were under a carport cover at a camp at the Albany Bulb when the reporting party attended his cousin's memorial service. The reporting party disconnected." That's your cue, Bulb apologists! Wake up and start typing.
dgies April 22, 2013 at 03:40 pm
Well it says the man appeared unstable. Perhaps his quantum state was oscillating between benches 4Read More blocks apart.
Dover April 22, 2013 at 02:28 pm
It's impossible to sit on a bench at Dartmouth and Portland.
Charles Burress (Editor) April 19, 2013 at 07:50 pm
A further note on the number of listings. The calls listed in the daily police log that is availableRead More for the press and the public to see does not include all the police calls. And the calls that we report in the blotter that we publish is a fraction of the ones on the daily police log. On April 12, for example, it appears that the police logged at least 80 calls, of which 36 were listed on the publicly available call log. We included five from that day in the blotter.
Alan Eckert April 19, 2013 at 07:05 pm
The report is also redacted, so not everything will show up in the requested report from theRead More station.
christopher papazoglow April 19, 2013 at 06:22 pm
tr- this is 'information obtained from' the police log and arrest reports. A 'highlights', if youRead More will. Doesn't mean they WEREN'T out there writing tickets, etc., between 11:48 a.m. and 11:05 p.m. Just wasn't of significance enough to make it into the "crime blotter".
