Mmm. I'm a member of the public also, and it's probably a good thing I won't get my hands on them,Read More as I might have to "express myself" too.

They weren't vandals, they were junior activists in training. It's a public school so it belongs toRead More them and they are entitled to express themselves in any way they see fit. ;-)

Perhaps the next essay to be assigned can be, "Why I Am Glad that America Is a Nation ofRead More Laws." Copies could be mailed to the Governor's mansion and to the White House, as well as the IRS and the Justice Department.

The dumb ones wouldn't listen. The dumb ones don't listen to cautionary advice about sex or drugs orRead More alcohol either. Some of them just have to learn life lessons the hard way. Oh well!

Oh, cmon. Accept responsibility. If your kid wants sugar, it's because of your failure as a parentRead More not because it's available at social events. Crack down; instill some discipline. The future of our nation depends on it.
Holly McCroskey April 30, 2013 at 03:46 pm
Oh please. Our school system is destroying our nation's health with an event involving free iceRead More cream for all comers at the city community center on a Sunday afternoon? That's ridiculous even if you accept the premise that kids should never ever eat packaged, processed, or sugary foods. For whatever it's worth, Jennifer, the Albany schools DO have rules that disallow serving the students high-sugar, low-nutrition foods on school grounds during school hours. (Although there is no rule against putting a cookie in your own kid's lunchbox, for which I at least am grateful. Certainly, healthy snacks and lunches are encouraged in any number of ways, but it is not the school administration's place to dictate what food a parent may or may not offer to his own child.) And as far as learning about nutrition in the classroom, did you know that the elementary students grow their own lettuce, kale, and broccoli? That the AUSD's chef works very hard, with a great deal of success, to produce appealing, affordable school lunches without using processed foods? No? Well, I'm glad you're happy in your private school in the next town. I hope that your kids are able to walk there and back, given that, as I'm sure you know, the practice of driving children to and from school in private cars is destroying our nation.

@ Jason Porter. My name is Katie and I have been the Ocean View PTA Vice President for the last 2Read More years. I am a white home owner, I live East of San Pablo, and OV has been our school of choice for 10 years. I am troubled by your comment as it is unfounded and only serves to perpetuate negative stereotypes about our community. I would like to encourage you to visit the California Department of Education and do your own homework; if you compare our schools with neighboring schools and to schools with a similar demographic make-up in the state of California, you will see how strong we are performing academically. Given that we have the highest number of ELD students, this speaks volumes about our staff and programs. I would also encourage you to take a tour of our campus, speak to our teachers and families, and join one of our social events. You will find a thriving community of culturally diverse people that take pride in their work, community, and children. We have our Aloha Potluck, with great entertainment, on June 7th, and you are more than welcome to join us! Our fall Walk-A-Thon has transformed into a carnival, and you should definitely stop by that one next year! Lastly, I would like to caution you about using words such as "ghetto" and "segregation," as many people take serious offense to that. Albany schools do not tolerate bullying and racism from our children, and we should not tolerate it from adults and community members either. Please feel free to contact me, our PTA, or staff at OV if you would like to discuss this further.

Ocean View is located next to UC Village; it is generally the elementary school preferred by parentsRead More who are graduate students living in UC Village. The Albany School District academic calendar does not correlate to the UC Berkeley academic calendar. Using the Spring 2013 semester as an example, AUSD had winter break February 18-22 and spring break April 15-19 but UC Berkeley's only break was March 25-29, 2013. So, if UC Berkeley families spent their break reuniting with their families for Passover or Easter, or otherwise spent their break vacationing outside of Albany, the kids missed some school. However, I am not blaming UC Village families. My experience with the attendance system at Ocean View included a problem with the excused absence form that did not include ALL of the reasons why an absence may be excused pursuant to Education Code 48200 and 48205, in particular, "for justifiable personal reasons including but not limited to" our attendance at an employment conference. (This same code section also lists observing religious holidays and ceremonies as justifiable personal reasons.) In response to a form letter from the school, I prepared my own letter explaining why my children were excused from school (I had verbally done so previously - if calling in sick is good enough then I don't know why calling in another lawful excuse was not). I suspect non-lawyer parents may not know the California code section to cite to disprove truancy.

AUSD high schools do NOT rank all that well in the US News ranking, and AUSD high schools failRead More "to achieve CA goal." (see: http://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/california/districts ). AHS ranks high because many struggling students are segregated off into an entirely separate high school (MacGregor), and their scores are not included in the AHS scores. While this inflates AHS scores, segregating students in this manner (even more than tracking) has been shown to hurt struggling students. Sadly, MacGregor students, who are disproportionately black and Latino, are isolated from the mainstream and have little opportunity to take college prep courses. Many school districts do not segregate their students in this way, and some rank higher than AHS.

Isn't U.S. News and World Report the paper sold from news boxes that look like TVs?
Rick Bloemhard March 26, 2013 at 04:14 am
That research is simplistic rather than conclusive. Their main lines of evidence are self reportedRead More effects easily attributable to getting a bit of extra sleep during the short followup (2 months). They should have followed up for a year or longer. The real problem for our students is sleep deprivation not class scheduling. If a kid goes to sleep on time they can get the 9 hours they need. But you kind of have to turn the TV and the Xbox and the PC and all the mobile devices off !! The only lasting effect of this change in schedule will be un-preparing students for real working hours later in life.

As a practical matter in families like ours where both parents work every weekday, we need to dropRead More our son off early. Hopefully AMS will offer at least early breakfast hours, but zero period band would be ideal.
Dylan Kurzer-Ogul March 22, 2013 at 07:59 pm
I am an 8th grader at Albany, and I am currently in two bands. I think it's really beneficial forRead More me, and I have become a better player because of the 2 classes I take. While I understand all of the studies about sleep deprivation and the worries of parents, all of the people I know in band want to keep their zero period. And I think that seeing that these are the people this change would affect the most, their opinions need to be respected. We are not little kids, we should be able to decide if we want to get up 1 hour earlier for band or not; we are responsible enough to make that decision. I think that everything parents and adults have said is valid, but they shouldn't make this decision for band students. It's not their elective.

Indeed it was a good day for eating a homophone too! Actually I debated with myself whether to useRead More "homophone" instead of "homonym," but ended up choosing the latter on the perhaps mistaken assumption that it would be more readily understood. I see that the learnersdictionary.com site whose link you included says homonyms have the same spelling, but I believe there are other dictionaries that permit homonym to have a wider range of meanings, including serving as a synonym for homophone.
L.A. Chung March 15, 2013 at 04:28 pm
I think it was a better day to eat a homophone. That is, unless Pi has changed its spelling, and IRead More missed it. ;-) 1. http://www.learnersdictionary.com/search/homonym 2. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/homophone As in, "I just can't bear it when a bear gets too close to campers. They're often in trouble when their food is stored improperly over there in Yosemite."

It is important to cover stories like this from start to finish because too many people, childrenRead More and adults, say "he was so wonderful, he COULDN'T have done something like this." Child molesters are next door neighbors, they teach our kids and babysit them. Your loving them has nothing to do with their behavior. It is hard for their victims not to be believed when a charge is brought and when the perp is defended because he was friendly or a beloved teacher. Better for everyone to realize that if a teacher is acting like he's one of the kids, he has poor boundaries and could be behaving inappropriately in other ways. Some people instinctively know this, others have to be taught. And others have to learn from cases like this one.
Albany Alumni March 15, 2013 at 06:55 pm
Agreed! It was horrifying to see all of the comments on Albany Patch attacking sexual assaultRead More victims (and children ones, at that!). As horrible as this whole situation has been, I hope that those people will finally realize how inexcusable their verbal treatment of the victims was. Yes, it's possible for people to make up accusations, but that's a major rarity, and sexual assault victims should always be taken seriously.
Brian Parsley March 15, 2013 at 06:47 pm
I believe Tater has confused Age of Consent with being a minor, but be that as it may, the commentsRead More that he is making a downright creepy. There really isn't any justification for the sexual abuse and exploitation of children, period.
