Hundreds Mourn at De Martini Funeral

An estimated 400 people crowded into El Cerrito's Sunset View Mortuary for Tyler De Martini's funeral on Tuesday. The 18-year-old died last week after a car hit him as he skateboarded on Marin Avenue near Albany.

It was standing room only, with many friends and loved ones spilling into hallways and an overflow room at Sunset View Mortuary on Tuesday to remember Tyler De Martini.  The 18-year-old Berkeley resident, and former El Cerrito High School student, died last week after a car struck him as he skateboarded along Marin Avenue near the Albany border. De Martini's funeral took place in El Cerrito on Tuesday morning, with an estimated 400-plus attendees. Afterward, he was buried in a private ceremony for family at St. Joseph Cemetery in San Pablo. Best friend Jordan Riker, in his eulogy, reflected on meeting De Martini in sixth grade at baseball try-outs at Castro Park. He described Tyler as a "short and stocky kid with a buzz cut and the biggest…

Being one of his closest friends, I know what kind of person he was. He was a smart, kind, loyal and talented person. He was the type of person that would offer his condolences to anybody who had lost someone, and never ever leave hurtful, disrespectful and inflammatory comments on an article about their funeral. Your comments say much less about what kind of person he was, and much more about …   more ›

Tears, Laughter, Love at De Martini Vigil Near Albany

Scores of Tyler De Martini's friends, along with family and concerned community members, took over a Berkeley corner Wednesday night to hold a candlelight vigil near the site of his skateboard crash into a car Monday.

Tyler "Active Ty" De Martini was spontaneous about his plans, driven about his skateboarding and a friend to everybody, recalled many who knew him, at a vigil for him in Berkeley on Wednesday night.  "He'd walk through the hallways at school and shake everybody's hand," said friend Elliot Spector, 17, who is a student at El Cerrito High School. De Martini, 18, was critically injured Monday when he was struck by a car while skateboarding down Marin Avenue near the Albany-Berkeley border at about 7 p.m. His family took him off life support Wednesday after doctors were unable to detect brain activity, and he was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m. For many friends at Wednesday night's impromptu vigil, which drew 60-80 people throughout the evening, …

I am so deeply, deeply sorry for the tragic loss of Tyler, and for his family and friends. I have much compassion for the driver, I can only imagine the pain, guilt, and undeserved self-blame he or she might be experiencing. Having driven that strip of road 1000's of times, I know how difficult it is to discern pedestrians in the glare of the headlights of oncoming traffic. And someone moving …   more ›

Column: Terry Teitler Braun Remembers Brother Stuart Teitler

Sister Terry Teitler Braun remembers her brother Stuart Teitler, who died earlier this month in Albany, CA.

[Editor's Note: A memorial service for Stuart Teitler is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 29, at The Pub on Solano Avenue. Terry Teitler shared these words for the service.] I’m sorry that I’m not there with all of you today to celebrate my darling brother’s life, but I’m so grateful that you are all there together to honor him today as a community. Already I have expressed my feelings in words Stuart would never have associated with himself – celebrate, community, honor, and darling. But Stu was darling – an absolutely wonderful big brother to me growing up. While his intensity, and obsessive collecting was extreme it was always mitigated by the joy of the consecutive passions he shared with me. He was 5 years old by the time I came along to …

Column: Remembering the Remarkable Life of Jane Imamura

An Albany resident, who never met the woman, recalls her as an iconic figure and has written an appreciation of her many contributions to furthering the study of Buddhism in America.

A special, exceptional and charismatic woman slipped into history over the holidays, and her passing went virtually unnoticed by the general public.   A memorial service was held Jan. 7 at the Berkeley Buddhist Temple for the legendary Jane Michiko Imamura, who died Dec. 26, 2011, at the age of 91.  Imamura was well-known in the Japanese American community for her contributions to the temple and to the Buddhist Churches of America, and particularly in California, Hawaii and Japan. Her passing marked a milestone of several memorable periods in the Buddhist Temple’s history. Her life encompassed the emotional upheaval when Japanese American families were uprooted from their homes and sent to internment camps to the harsh resettlement period …

Obituary: Remembering Stuart Teitler

Longtime Albany resident Stuart Teitler died last week. If you knew Stuart, please share your memories in the comments below this post.

Stuart Teitler was my cousin. He died this past week at the age of 71. Sadly, he took his own life. Stuart was quite a character. He was a world-renowned book collector whose passion was Lost Race Fiction. He was a pretty good tap dancer too. I saw him at the “old” Ivy Room. He loved music and dancing. He could write, and he could draw. He had a lot of friends at The Pub. I wasn’t very close to my cousin, but I loved him. Stuart is survived by his sister Terry, his brother Robert, and his cousins Steve, Jackie, Alan, Arlene, Stan and me. There will be a memorial for Stuart on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 2-6 p.m. at The Pub in Albany. Please add your memories of Stuart to this post. Many of you knew him better than I, and I know you really miss …

Geoff Hunt Memorial Page Created on Facebook

Friends set up this page on Facebook so survivors could "post stories, pics, videos or anything to remember him by."

Many current and past Albany residents were stunned earlier this month to learn of the death of Geoffrey W. Hunt, Albany High class of 1985.  Friends have set up a Facebook page to collect stories and photographs of Hunt, who turned 44 in February.  According to a posting on the site: "This fan page is dedicated to a man who is more than a friend. He is my brother and the page is for everyone who would like to share ANY thoughts, feelings, memories, photos, videos or anything to honor the memory of Geoff." High school photographs of Geoff that are posted on the page show his lively spirit, as he played football, dressed as a cheerleader with other boys during "Switcharoo day" and sang onstage with Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman of the band…

Einstein's Granddaughter: Moving Tributes at Memorial in El Cerrito

At a memorial gathering Saturday in El Cerrito, numerous friends recalled the sharp mind, keen interest in life, critical disposition and health battles of Evelyn Einstein, who died April 13 at her Albany home.

In the collective portrait painted by her friends at a memorial gathering Saturday, Evelyn Einstein was remembered as extraordinarily sharp and expressive when she wanted to be — in her laughter, her criticisms, her love of friends and conversation, her complaints, and her collection of objects that filled her Albany condominium. Einstein, who died April 13 at age 70 after suffering many years from diabetes and other health problems, possessed a keen mind, extensive knowledge on many subjects, a love of animals and wide-ranging interests in the large and small, her friends said at the private gathering of 32 people at Sunset View Cemetery in El Cerrito. And she believed she was the secret, natural daughter of Albert Einstein, born of a …
