Berkeley Crash Victim was Single Mother, Recent Cal Grad, University Village Resident

A statement about Milanca Alicia Lopez was released on Facebook after her death. Her son, Xavier, remained in critical condition as of Friday morning. Click "Keep me posted" for more information about this topic.

The woman who died in Berkeley in Friday's fatal car wreck at California Street and Allston Way has been identified by friends as Milanca Alicia Lopez, who still lived in University Village with her young son, Xavier.  According to a statement posted on Facebook, her son remained in critical condition Friday. Authorities said repeatedly on Friday that all three crash victims were Berkeley residents, but that does not appear to be true. Lopez still has an apartment in Albany's University Village.  There will be a candlelight vigil for Lopez on Sunday at 5 p.m., according to University Village Family Housing director Tavie Tipton. The vigil will take place at the corner of Allston Way and California Street in Berkeley: "Please feel free to …

[Editor's Note: Berkeley Police said all three crash victims were Berkeley residents, but local officials said two of the victims still lived in University Village in Albany. This story was updated May 19 to reflect this.] Two people involved in a fatal crash in Berkeley early Friday morning lived in University Village, but details from authorities remain scant.  A woman who died in the accident was identified by authorities only as a woman in her 20s; police said she and her young son, who also was injured in the crash, used to live in the Village. Police said all three crash victims were current Berkeley residents. But, according to information received Saturday, the mother and son were still residents of University Village in Albany.  …

My good friend was her soccer coach when she was 5-6, and a good family friend. Just learned of her passing. So very sad. What a tremendous success she was for her son and her family. A life cut short yet a banner for accomplishment in what a determined single mother is capable of. RIP Milanco Lopez.   more ›

While walking on Albany Hill with my daughter some months ago, I believe we observed the "laser energy transmission" to which the May14th, 7:12 pm complaint refers. It was a surprisingly intense, flashing, orange-yellow light coming from the area noted in the complaint for ten seconds or so. I work at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), which I believe is what the police department …   more ›

A man traversing San Pablo Avenue without using a crosswalk was hit by a vehicle in late April, authorities said.  On April 23, just after 9 p.m., a 51-year-old driver from Richmond was leaving the northern driveway of BevMo! and making a left turn onto San Pablo when she hit a man accompanied by two women as they tried to cross the street heading west. The pedestrians, all from Brentwood, included two women, ages 72 and 66, and an 85-year-old man, said Lt. John Geissberger of the Albany Police Department. The driver struck the man, who was holding hands with one of the women. Both fell to the ground and received minor injuries. I think the lieutenant probably cited the right code. Perhaps it's the one he specified because San Pablo is technically a state highway?   more ›

Police Draw Guns on Driver at Solano, San Pablo

Albany Police responded Thursday afternoon to what appeared to be a stolen vehicle. Further investigation revealed the vehicle had not been stolen.

Several readers reported this week that they'd seen six police units, and officers with guns drawn, just after noon on Thursday at Solano and San Pablo avenues.  Police said later in the day that they had responded to what appeared to be a stolen vehicle at that intersection, and responded with their procedure for handling such a case.  Albany Police Lt. Dan Adams said, after further investigation, the vehicle was found not to have been stolen.  Two people detained during the incident were released.  If there's something in this article you think should be corrected, or if something else is amiss, call editor Emilie Raguso at 510-459-8325 or email her at albany@patch.com.
