@Marty have you every thought about the kids that can't afford to go? These proms have become so out of reach for some parents. Between ticket cost, dress, hair, nails, shoes, pictures, ride, dinner. It really set parents back. Yes, these kids look very nice and look like they are having a good time. But there are many that are not able to take part in this because of the cost. It would be great …   more ›

Column: "Spring Fling" on Friday to be Feast for the Ears

Music instruction in the Albany public schools continues at high levels thanks to the Albany Music Fund. Support it by attending the "Spring Fling."

Trumpet trills, trombone swoops and sultry saxophones scales filled the air as the nervous students warmed up. Conductor Craig Bryant raised his baton. Stillness. Then, the most exquisite Duke Ellington “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” swelled from those same instruments. The audience cheered wildly as the session of the Folsom Jazz Festival 2012 continued with more jazz greats from the Albany musicians, and then the judges voted Albany High School Jazz Lab first place in its division. Another day, another honor for Albany Unified School District music groups. Similar scenes of Albany music groups wowing audiences and winning first place in competitions repeats itself many times a year as Albany choral ensembles, stringed orchestras, …

While a number of places in Albany such as the Albany pool did not choose to create a bike friendly environment (no bike parking at all), it is good to see that nearby communities and businesses are bike friendly. Let’s hope bicyclists and pedestrians will become more accepted and safer in Albany in the coming months and years. http://berkeley.patch.com/articles/blessing-of-the-bikes-gets-riders-…   more ›

Varsity Boys Win, in First Home Splashes of Season

This story appeared first on the Albany High School Cougar Online, and has been reprinted here with permission. Click the "Keep me posted" button below for more stories about the Albany pool.

[This story appeared first on the Albany High School Cougar Online, and has been reprinted here with permission. Read more here from the The Cougar.] On Thursday, March 22, the Albany High School Swim Team hosted its first regulation home meet in its history at AHS. In the last three years, while the Albany Aquatic Center was under construction, the team held practices and hosted meets at the El Cerrito Swim Center. Before 2008, the team swam in the old Albany Pool, and while it was fine for practices, the pool was 33.3 yards long, rather than 25 yards, and did not meet competition standards. However, the team did host unofficial meets at this time. For its first regulation meet, the AHS swim team hosted Piedmont. Spectators including …

Equity in Albany

School Address Reverification Reopens Old Wounds

The return of the address verification process for families in the Albany Unified School District has resurfaced complaints that arose last year, along with several suggestions from parents to improve the process.

Last month, the Albany Unified School District announced that it again was time for parents of district students to verify their home addresses to prove they belong in the district. It's a new tradition that began last year and will continue into the forseeable future.  Monday, some parents reported receiving an automated telephone call reminding them that the verification process would begin Monday for the 2012-13 school year.  A number of parents spoke out against the process in comments on Albany Patch in March, calling it a waste of time and money.  Others said they saw the process as an important way to ensure that classrooms include only students who live in the district or have received the appropriate approval to attend Albany …

I too bought in Albany to provide my son with a good education; when I found out that the schools were misrepresented in that regard, I (legally) transferred him to BHS. I got NO rebate from Albany on this action. Note also an important disctinction: It was you, not your child that made the opportunity (or not) for their education here. When students are 'illegally' here, it also is their PARENTS…   more ›

AHS Chemistry Teacher Carlock on Leave Until June Retirement

The school district is working to hire her replacement as the AP test date looms.

Albany High School's Peggy Carlock, a veteran chemistry teacher of more than 30 years, has stepped down from her position amid much speculation this week.  According to the Albany Unified School District, Carlock submitted a letter of retirement, effective come June, and will be on leave from teaching until that time. "We have a substitute in the classes now and are advertising for a long term sub," said school Superintendent Marla Stephenson by email on Thursday. Albany High Principal Ted Barone said he emailed parents Thursday that "We are moving as quickly as possible to hire a well-qualified replacement," adding that he would keep parents updated via email. According to the College Board, the advanced placement test in chemistry is …

I had Mrs. Carlock a few years ago. Reading some of the previous comments, it is clear that she used to be a talented and inspiring teacher. But now, she is just an arrogant teacher who derives legitimacy from her former glory and her associations with Seaborg. She doesn't teach or attempt to teach; in my year of AP Chem, she taught only five or six classes the entire year. Even at colleges, …   more ›

Letter to the Editor

Letter: Could Lower Pool Class Fees Bring More Swimmers?

Albany Patch welcomes your letters. Email albany@patch.com with your 300-word submissions.

[Editor's Note: Albany Patch would love your 300-word letters to the editor. Learn more here.] I wondered if anyone from the school district can clarify the policies regarding water aerobics class drop-in fees. Right now they are exorbitant! And will there be passes offered to buy and use for workout times when there are not classes? It's apparent that the Albany Pool clients—especially some lap swimmers and the aerobics class participants—are enthusiastic about our beautiful, warm, new indoor pool. The staff is top notch. The locker room and showers are terrific and will be even more user-friendly when hooks are installed. There are many people who used to come to Albany pool who have been using other pools during the years of rebuilding…

What would it take? Lower cost, less rigid sign-up system, a drop-in possibility for water aerobics, three times per week for water aerobics as well as 8 am and 9 am classes. In the old pool there were up to 40 people per class. Something is keeping many of those from coming back. Cost is a big factor. The Richmond Swim Center has punch cards for signing in; there must be a better system for …   more ›
