The Albany Rotary Club was founded in 1929 and has 30 active members, most of whom are small business owners orMore Albany city government managers. The club is a service organization that usually works on projects in tandem with other community and service-minded organizations.</p> <p>Some projects recently completed include landscaping of the Key Route Boulevard median strip, rebuilding the home of a local senior citizen following a devastating fire, building and repairing a school in Mexico and helping to drill community water wells in Africa.</p> <p>The group meets Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. at the Solano Grill & Bar. Membership in the Albany Rotary Club is by invitation from an existing Rotary member and, to qualify for membership, a candidate must live or work within Albany or adjacent to Albany. He or she must hold or be retired from an executive position in any recognized business or profession or community volunteer work.</p>

The Albany Police Department handles patrol operations, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, schoolMore crossing guard services and administrative support services. It employs 26 sworn officers, nine full-time support staff members, five part-time support staff members and six part-time crossing guards. Four unpaid volunteer officers supplement staffing. </p> <p>The Police Department focuses on crime prevention through community outreach including <a href="http://www.albanyca.org/index.aspx?page=827">Neighborhood Watch</a>, <a href="http://www.albanyca.org/index.aspx?recordid=2561&page=833">National Night Out</a> and the <a href="http://www.albanyca.org/index.aspx?page=194">Albany Police Activities League youth services programs</a>. </p> <p>The department has a part-time community engagement specialist who assists in neighborhood organizing and problem solving, community disaster preparedness and crime prevention education. Police grants administered by the department include drunk driving, seat belt education and underage tobacco sales enforcement programs. </p> <p>All 911 dispatch calls for police, fire and medical emergencies are handled by the Police Department. The dispatch operations are part of a "Public Safety Answering Point," which also handles routine telecommunications services first responders. Dispatchers use a Computer Aided Dispatch program and Records Management System that is linked to mobile computers in each patrol vehicle. Each year, Albany's dispatcher logs more than 33,000 incidents, including more than 2,000 911 calls and 11,000 calls for service. </p>
