Relay for Life is May 18 - 19

Purple ribbons abound. Men and women are in and out of the field. Teams are warming up. The stage is all set. Tents are slowly getting put up and the sun is barely coming out. It must be Relay Day! It started out as an ordinary day in May of 1985, when the first ever Relay was held in Tacoma, Washington. A colorectal surgeon decided he wanted to raise funds in honor of his patients and for the bigger cause of the American Cancer Society. Little did Dr. Gordon Klatt know that those 24 hours he spent walking the tracks of Baker Stadium would begin the history of today’s Relay For Life. On May 18-19, 2013, filling up Cougar Field behind Albany Middle School, Albany residents will continue the fight that against cancer that was begun 28 years ago. . Going on its third year, the community will once again gather to battle the disease that has long enough been the cause of missing out on more birthdays, more life. With its focus mainly on Celebrating survivors, Remembering loved ones lost, and Fighting back against the illness, the Relay for Life raises funds for the American Cancer Society to continue financing cancer research, patient and caregiver services, and public awareness and education.
