Picture Yourself in Jail – Fun with Albany Police at 'Safety Palooza'

Sunday will see the Albany City Hall parking lot transformed into "Safety Palooza" – a kind of police mini-fair or open house for adults and kids to have hands-on fun while learning about how the city's police department does its job.

If you're not accustomed to thinking of a police department as a weekend fun destination, you may be in for a surprise if you go the Albany police "Safety Palooza" on Sunday.

The free event at the parking lot behind City Hall and the Police Department promises fun and informative ways for kids and adults to get to know their local police. Activities include a hands-on look at some of the tools that police use, demonstrations of how easy it is to break a car window and the chance to have your picture taken inside an ersatz jail.

Here's a community message about the event distributed by Karina Tindol, the department's Community Engagement Specialist:

Hope this summer finds you having fun—the Albany Police Department has more fun lined up for you this weekend — Safety Palooza!

This is a great opportunity for you and your children to take a look around our Department and learn more about what it is we do every day. There will be officers & dispatchers on hand to answer your questions and let you handle some of the tools & equipment we use. Plus you can climb inside a police cruiser (front or back—your choice!) and snap a great picture.
