Albany Community Foundation Spruces up Jackson Street

Local residents tended to Albany Hill in June, and offer another chance to get involved in October.

In September 2009, the Albany Community Foundation, local neighbors and city arborist Tony Wolcott began to plant native vegetation on and remove weeds from Jackson Street between the Castro Street steps and Hillside Avenue.

Over the winter, encouraged by the rain, the plants flourished -- but so did the weeds. On June 19, volunteers returned for more weed abatement and mulching. Tony's big dump truck was overflowing by the end of the morning. It was very gratifying to see the plants, which had been so carefully planted last fall, thriving.

This was the first of three scheduled work parties. The next will be Saturday Oct. 16, and the final one is planned for February 2011.
